ATI GPU Fan 100% at Startup but no picture etc.

You know the way gpu fans spin up fast at startup for a couple of seconds and then go back to normal as the PC boots, is there a fix for when the GPU fan just stays stuck at 100% at startup with no display on the monitor etc? (PC is POSTing and booting fine, as proven by swapping out other cards, there is just no display from this GPU).

It's my old HD4800, this used to happen regularly on my old system (even when the card was new) but if you just switched the PC off and on again 2-3 times it worked fine. Now I'm putting it in my brother's system and even re-starting 20 times the 4800 fan just blazes up to 100% at startup but refuses to come back down to normal so there is no display.

Please note: all other components (E8600, P35C-DS3R, Antec 650W psu etc. work perfectly and I have tested them with several other cards (X300, 8800GTX, 6970) so the problem definitely appears to just be the 4800 at startup. Also tested on my other system in sig, exact same problem except 2-3 restarts overrides it and the card then works fine in games.

Any ideas on a fix for this? It seems rare enough on Google, people always suggest PSU isses but my Antec 650 and Corsair HX 620 are both working fine.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, someone must have come across this before?

GPU sounds dead, especially if it works as soon as you swap another card in. The other differential would be a PSU problem (e.g. 12V not plugged in fully).

Yes it must be the gpu but the thing is it works fine, even in intensive games, once you get it to startup. Just wondering if anyone has found a way of kickstarting it into action at startup

What's your brother's mobo? The only other time I've seen this happen is on very old motherboards with outdated bioses.

One thing you can try to 'kick-start' is taking the mobo battery out and clearing CMOS before each boot attempt.

There's something majorly wrong with the GPU, probably something to do with the power connection to psu or motherboard. You probably should have RMAed it in the beginning :(.

I had this issue when I received my 5970 and used Displayport (which worked fine) but if I left the cable connected to the card when I powered on the fans would just spin at 100% and no display, soon as i disconnected the cable and powered on it worked fine.

It's a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R but it works fine with the other cards. It's on the latest BIOS, F12.

Yeah you're right I should have rma'd it when the problems started but it just seemd like a quirk, it worked fine once you re-started it 2-3 times. But on the other mobo it won't startup at all :(

hmm, sounds similar alright but I'm not using Displayport. I'll try googling Displayport issues though, cheers for that.
