ATI GPU Keeps Crashing

Hi

Quick question, just trying to stop my dads pc from crashing all the time.

Basically whenever he uses windows movie maker or his webcam the screen goes black and the ATI GPU Recovery message comes up.

It doesn't always happen straight away but eventually it will crash, the system also struggles to play video (the video breaks up).

However it can run 3D Mark 03 perfectly well, and Iplayer plays fine.

It's an ATI 46xx series card (think it's a 4650 but not sure) and has the latest drivers.

I'm thinking he needs a new card but if anyone has any suggestions then I'm all ears.

Cheers

Steve

No onboard graphics sadly, however I did just completely remove the gfx drivers and when reinstalling the latest ones the ATI installation manager crashed during the driver installation.

If it was just doing it in Win XP then I'd say it was a software issue but I have Win 7 as a dual boot and that crashes as well.

Think it's time for a new card

may well look that way.
have you tried reseating the card?
It also may be heat issues, although 3dmark does run fine. you could try putting some new thermal paste on.

if you or a friend have a spare gpu then try that to make sure it's not a different problem.
