Is it just my Powercolour ATI X850XT (agp) that's noisier than the rest of the computer even at 14% fan speed or does anyone else find them noisey little critters.. well not so little lol.
Seriously my next graphics card will be chosen by noise not performance. All the fans in my machine run at under 2000rpm apart from the CPU heatsink. My last ati card didn't even have a fan lol, and i'd definately say my machine is much louder now. Anything I can do about it, apart from buying another card?

Unfortunatly all you can do is put a aftermarket heatsink on it, the Zalmans are the best for performance or if you like it quiet then a Artic Cooler is your best bet.

But seriously are they all that loud??? are the Nvidia's the same? I was really surprised first time i fired it up.

My X800XT-PE Was pretty quiet, but that was a single slot cooler. I've fitted a Zalman VF900 now, generally for overclocking purposes :)

lol zalmans are virtually inaudible, never used arctic cooling though, but zalmans are very good at what they do, so are there CPU coolers

Just fitted a water cooling solution to a powercolor 850 XT PE, I thought how quiet the original fan was at 15%. It's noisey at 100% though.

It's noisy at 14%? I wouldn't have thought the fan would be moving with so little voltage

The stock fans generally aren't silent, so I would go for a Zalman copper cooler - they are very quiet :)

I dont think it should be that loud mate?

Its loud when you first fire it up, but after that it should go pretty quiet.

The rest of your system must be very quiet :).

Do they do arctic coolers for the x850's?

Tom

Yeah, they do those Accelero's X2 Tom or what ever they are, they are technically sposed to be the quietest but if it was me I would stick a Zalman on there as its quiet and has better performance.

Edit: I thought he had a X1800, doh, "note to self" try reading next time :p

I'm afraid that the stock cooler is very loud. I have just replaced my 7800GTX Extreme Edition (with the 7900GTX cooler) for a 1900XT-X. The 1900XT-X cooler is extremely noisy to me when playing games.

The rest of my system only has two fans though:

80mm fan on swiftech cooler on CPU. This is set to minimum speed on fan controller.

120mm fan on seasonic S12-600w PSU.

As others have said, replace the stock cooler with an after market one to silence the GPU.

I can't say that I find the stock cooler on my PowerColor Radeon X1800XT all that noisy, the fan only ever spins particular fast when I first start the machine, which is noisy but otherwise it stays fairly quiet. I do however have a wind tunnel right through my case thanks to 2 120mm fans :) ...and I have a blower style cooler mounted sideways over the graphics card to provide it with a bit of extra fresh air. In all it's quieter than my old 6800GT was, accept when running full pelt, but as I say, it never does.

I had an X800XT which was pretty quiet with the stock cooler.
Throttled back nicely in 2D mode.

I've now got a 7900GT and I have to say that the cooler on it sucks.
It ran at 100% speed all the time and was just way too loud when just browsing or doing general desktop stuff.

Had to purchase a Zalman to silence it, so its not just an ATI thing.

glitch:

The one that came with my Lian Li V1000 Plus. It attatches to the side of the case, which as you may know is fall of tiny holes, and uses these to draw air into the blower fan and push it over the graphics card, it's not very powerful but it is very quiet, and every little helps.

Thanks, Moeks.

Do you know if you can buy those seperately? I don't have a v1000+ but my case has the same holes in much the same place.

I don't know for sure, but I don't think so, at least I have never seen them. You could probably buy a better one anyway to be honest, it just may not be in matching aluminium :)
