would this be asking for trouble or is it as easy as changing some drivers? i know someone who ran an nvidia card on a dfi crossfire board and he had no problems but would there be a performance drop or anything?

It works fine no performance drop. Reverse is true, NV works fine on ATI boards. They have to support PCI-E standards, hence it works fine and always will :)

CrossFire won't work on NV boards. SLI won't work on non-NV boards.

It will be absolutley fine :)
I have run several ATi cards on Nforce 2,3,4 and 680I chipsets with no problems and spot on performance :)

True true, but dont ever buy for the future, for example you see people buying 8800s etc nvidia cards because it will be able to run "crysis" in directx 10  Wow! dx10! lol.. when in reality they will be able to play it probibly wont even get good fps maxed out graphics for example theres allready DX9 games which will bring it to its knees.

There will allways be better cards around the corner, you just got go for it and buy somthing new every now and again or you will be waiting for ever :)

I got my 2900 and dont reget a single second of it

you are so right, its a bit like trading in a car... if you choose the right time then you dont depreciate too much and find yourelf spending the same little amount of cash each year to upgrade.
