Looking at the connector requirements for the 6970 - anyone know if corsair tx 650 w would be enough for it, given that it's already powering an overclocked quad phenom II 955 ?

Cat in PJs - You should be fine going by the Anandtech review. Gives a full system load of 361w in Furmark on a i7 920 @ 3.3Ghz.

Nice to see the 6970 is a single 2GB VRAM rather than two 1GB GPUs underclocked to 5850 speeds as in the case of the 5970.

You would've thought that the 6970 (£285) would be at least on par now with the dearer 5970 (£450), but in Metro 2033 its 17.89% slower according to the anandtech review today @1920x1200 max and so the price reflects that. Thats not me picking out one bad bench - as I'm surprised its that bad - it continues to Bad Company 2 (same settings) is 29.32% slower than the 5970.

Buying two 6970s does at least get you level pegging with two 580's, that certainly shows the scalability of this card is much better than the last generation at the higher resolutions. Being priced at under £300 for the 6970 is still good as long as your not trying to break benchmark records, it does for any current games. I'd grab one now while they're available and at this price - only one way for these prices to go if we judge by the last generation shortages.

yup asked the exact same question myself earlier only difference i'm running an overclocked q9450 :)

should be fine :)

Just so you know, the 6970 isn't aimed at replacing the 5970, rather is a direct replacement for the 5870. AMD already had the 6870 taken with the replacement for the 5770. The card you are looking for is the 6990 Antilles dual GPU card, which, judging by how good these cards are for the cash and how well they scale in multi-GPU setups, is going to be absolutely epic. :)

I knew as much with the 6870 not being a replacement for the 5870 due to the lower performance Shayper. I'm a bit old fashioned and normally manufacturers mucking about with the model numbers means having to digest benchmarks and start from scratch, just to make sure it's good value.

I did take my eye off the ball from the 6990 Antilles but did see its due beginning 2011. Ati are resurrecting this high-end range from the 4000-series that featured (the boring) 4890, but missed the 5000-series as we had to make do with the 5970 which was fair enough at that price point. Any extreme editions from the 5000-series came in the form of the Toxic 5970 4GB which only featured an extreme pricetag and not extreme performance. Good news this time is that there's a 6990 4GB edition for all you Eyefinity/30-inch gamers, featuring a speedy 1200MHz clock compared to the 2GBs 850MHz. Its anyones guess what the memory clock will be but the 6970 manages 1375MHz, maybe a push towards 1450MHz isn't too optimistic? There's no doubt this will be the fastest dual-gpu solution for gaming in the world but normally there is a premium price for such a privilege.

Its only fair to compare it to my current 5970 which means the 6990 Antilles is rumoured to feature 20% more stream processor units using the more efficient 6800-series Cayman architecture to enable better performance with games featuring tessellation that heavily impacts of framerates compared to Nvidia. Compared to the 5970, the 6990 will use a dual 256-bit memory bus to enable 307GB/s of bandwidth (850MHz), 32 less texturing units (128) and the same number of ROPs (64). Its sounds a beast and will be looking forward to see how it performs and how pricing compares to Ati's 5970 and Nvidias 580.
