ATI HD3870XT - Single versus Crossfire

Excellent work, might think about changing my 2900xt to 2 of these instead of GTS / GTX. Hmm decisions, decisions.

did u notice any graphical problems in crysis or stuttering, my 2900 crossfire seems to get high FPS but doesnt feel as smooth.

Just out of curiosity, would my motherboard (Gigabyte DS3P) Work well if I bought two of these and crossfired them?

OcUK ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 512MB

Thanks

Merry Christmas :D

yep

Merry Christmas :D back at ya :)

But marscay you have an X38 motherboard with both PCI-E slots running x16. P35 bases boards run the second PCI-E slot at only x4. Don’t you think this will maybe limit the amount crossfire scales on P35 board?? I’m not sure if it would or not as I’ve not seen any comparisons done.

PCI-E Slot will slow performance down, there was a chart and on the 8800 series cards the performance hit at 4x was quite abit whilst on x1900 cards it was minimal, I'm thinking it'll be same with the 3870's as it was with the 8800's.

bit-tech did a crossfire test a little while back, x38 v p35 v p35 blitz (8x-8x).

the results were a mixed bag and in general the blitz had the best performance, more than a few fps at times over the standard 16/4 p35 board.

the x38 results were indifferent but the boards had only just been released so taking early bios into consideration you could expect x38 to now be at least equal and be faster than the 8x-8x blitz board on occasions but probably nothing earth shattering.

you won't get bad performance on a 16/4 board but x38 would definitely perform better, be good to see the tests run again now that x38 has matured into a stable board and decent 38xx drivers are out.

haven't even played the game yet m8, been waiting until i got my cards sorted with decent drivers before i even played crysis/cod4 etc.

will have a poke around later and see if i experience the same as you in actual gameplay.

p.s. added HL2:Lost Coast results and currently making way through HL2:EP2 but gotta be with the missus for a little while .....the nagging has started :)

LOL i Love Living alone & only having to go & see the girlfriend when she text & nags me enough & have run out of excuses :D

HL2-EP2 and MOH:A (great game :)) added, i think that's me done for a little bit - might actually start playing my way through a few of these now.

I've got a few games that i wouldn't mind doing also, GOW and STALKER come to mind and maybe Armed Assault too - if anyone wants me to bench something for them give us a shout and i'll see if i have the game.

Pretty surprised by the results to be honest, it really does seem to me that crossfire is working pretty damn well right now with these games listed at least. I'm sure there's quite a few titles with no crossfire profiles or poor performance but i really haven't come across any just yet. For the record i haven't modified any of the games config files etc, they are stock apart from maxing out the visual/performance section 'in game' and the CCC settings are also put to maximus quality except for Vsync of course.

I think if ATI can nail the drivers for X2 off the bat and price competitively they will have a real winner on their hands, albeit we don't know what's in store with NV's next monster card.

Even I'm surprised by the results, if I knew they would be that good I proberbly would have got the SLi version of my mobo and went for a 3870 and proberbly have got a second one on order by now, unfortunatly I cant travel in time :(.

My thoughts exactly, although would be interesting if Sli performance is just as good if not better, my next mobo may have to very well be one of those triple pciexpress mobos ;)

Cos u never know there might be some decent mid range cards that give the highend cards a run for there money ie the 3870 or GT imagine 3 of those ;)

well a new monitor too :)

yeh don't insult these cards in crossfire by running less than 1900 res :p it's about the perfect resolution for them right now and should give great gaming performance in everything for quite awhile, especially UT based engines.

Well done Marscay. Excellent read.
As said earlier in thread need some one with SLI rig to do same tests as a comparison.

Nice results :) I have the full version of crysis, but where can I find the benchmark to run please?

Would be really nice if I could pick up a new motherboard for my Birthday, then do some overtime to get a second 3870, as these results are looking pretty good :) Although at only 1280*1024, I will probably see little to no benefit d'oh!
