Hello. :)

New here, as you can see, although some may recognise me from Overclock.net where I have the same username.

I was wondering (roughly) what the chances are of me obtaining an ATi HD5770 with the V1 cooler nowadays as opposed to the V2; I don't like leaving VRMs and memory chips un-cooled.

If anyone has any idea, I'd be most grateful.

Thanks. :D

Thanks! :)

And yes, The V1 version being the one with the shroud, as opposed to the Tear-Shaped version that some of the newer ones are.

I'd like the one at the back... much better looking, in my opinion, and it cools the VRMs/memory chips too while the Tear-shaped one does not.

Supposedly the V2 is a better cooler for the core though. Swings and roundabouts I'd say, not that I'll be clocking one. I have to agree though, the V1 looks a lot nicer than the ATI egg.

Perhaps. I've not always had success with receiving the item shown in the picture though.

Yup, the V2 is a few degrees better for the core, but I'd rather make sure my VRMs and memory were cooled, to be honest. The VRMs will get a lot hotter once you start overclocking and pushing more voltage through the cards.

Do you reckon it's possible to put mini heatsinks on them? That might be the best of both worlds if it can be modded in somehow.

Actually, looks like some are under the cooler and on the top of the card, some on the back, so not really poss for all.

Yeah, you can get Zalman RAMsinks, and Swiftech ones too, but I'd rather just have the shroud to be honest. It looks SO much better, and you don't have to pay out your pocket for them.

You just use thermal tape to attach them to the memory chips and the VRMs.

I'll be honest: It's mainly the aesthetics that I care about. I'm making a techstation from acrylic (expect to see a buildlog or something of that) so I'll be seeing a lot of these cards, and I love the look of the HD5770s' V1 cooler.

Hmm... thanks, Chris. :)

I can't wait to get a couple o' these cards for CrossFire, to be honest. It should be pretty epic. I'm going to be getting a couple of Black Ice Pro 240mm radiators for free, so I might eventually just throw them in my water cooling loop too.

I love these cards' power consumption; 90W at full load is amazing.

Is there a huge difference with these in crossfire cus i was thinking of this for a temp card untill i can afford somthing like a 5970 :) but theres other things i need to buy first

Scaling is pretty amazing; in some cases a couple of HD5770s are placed in-between the ATi HD5850 and the HD5870 in terms of performance.

I have used Zalman ramsinks on mine and made a heatsink from an old Pentium cooler to go on the vrm's. Works perfectly. Took the crappy shroud off the egg cooler too and replaced the TIM with MX-2.

I have VRM sinks on my crossfire 5770s, and they only get slighly warm while running at 1000 / 1445.

The VRM chips on these cards dont really need any additional cooling, if you are worried, just put on some heatsinks and they'll be more than fine.

Heh... you guys don't understand! :p

I want the V1 coolers because they look nicer... much nicer.

I take it you stare at the cards instead of the monitor :p

Seriously though, i wanted the shroud version originally but its been changed for a reason and the shroud doesnt cool the vrm's anyway. The ram sinks don't do much either. From everywhere i have seen, the egg cooler is more effective.

I'm building an acrylic techstation though; that's why I want the shrouded versions. :p

I'm going to see the cards a lot.

So I might just end up putting them in a water cooling loop.

If you are checking the temp after stressing the cards the yes that is fine, think mine run at 50° idle; remember that is a vast improvement over the 48** cards which tooled along at 70-90 if you didn't up the fan to 45%

I was sceptical of the v2 cooler when I got mine but soon came around when I cranked up crysis and could barely hear the fan

Also ram doesn't need cooling on a gfx card as gddr5 runs very efficently and a lot cooler than ddr3
