Hi First post on here,

Im currently running an alienware P4 2.8, intel p875pbz mobo, 6600GT 256mb, 2gb memory, im looking to either upgrade or buy new, i have posted in here as my main questions are graphics related rather than other components, i currently play BF2142 no way near maxed 1024x768 i lag like crazy on the titans and put this down to a poor fx card, would either of the below improve this situation.

1) if i was to upgrade to either the sapphire x1950xt or gecube x1950xt which are regarded as the best agp cards available currently how long would this keep my current system going.

2) checked out ocuk recently and was wondering which would be the better system, single 8800gtx based system or the xfire x2900 system prices are similar so would the dual card ati system be better?

Cheers All Jason

You can buy a nice new GFX card but that CPU will hold you back big time in the BF games, especially on big maps with lots of players on, you will still lag. I use to lag with a 940D @ 4ghz, when i went to the e6600, my lag went and the game plays real smooth.

On question number 2 the x2900xt xfire system is faster than a gtx and is also faster than an ultra. Down sides to that are power needed and heat
produced but crossfire seems to be scaling up much better than sli atm.

For your P4 2.8 system you could just get an X1950Pro which would be a big step up from your current videocard & keep that system going a while longer, especially as you have 2 gig ram. Try a slight overclock on the CPU as well.

The 2x 2900XT cards would be faster - so yes they would be the better choice for gaming.

Then again 2 x8800gts would be faster than 2x HD2900XT propberbly :p, I would go with 2 8800GTX, more expensive sure, but less power consumption, less heat (I think), less noise, and better performance.

But yea no point going with even an 8800gtx with that CPU, gonna be a hude bottleneck, an x1950Pro would be good enough or an 8800GTS, if your planning on upgrading your CPU really soon then maybe 1 8800GTX tbh.

Titan mode on 2142 is a real pc destroying monster, you need a very modern med-high end machine to stop/reduce the problems.

What sized screen do you have?

I would recommend an 8800gtx/ultra but that's if your screen can do over the res you stated you game at in 2142.

The only thing to remember is that ATi will operate in crossfire for pretty much all games. If I recall correctly, I believe nVidia SLI will only work with those games that support it. Plus Crossfire is currently more stable than SLi until nVidia sort their drivers out.

SLI will use a default rendering mode for the game if an optimal profile is not found in the drivers.
Crossfire does the exact same thing, however is a slightly more efficient way of teaming graphics cards.

Samsung SyncMaster 940bf 19" 2ms

if i buy new here are the 2 systems im looking at

8800gtx http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-032-OK&groupid=43&catid=781&subcat=

2900xt XFire http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-047-OK&groupid=43&catid=781&subcat=

for reference 8800 sli price is higher but also comes with QX6700 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-018-OK&groupid=43&catid=781&subcat= (cannot afford this spec)

If you can afford the Xfire system i would probably get that as its significantly more powerful than a single gtx system.

On some games at higher res and 16AF 4AA the X1950XTX crossfire beats the HD2900XT crossfire, so I don't rate it that well. I would take a single GTX any day, especially given that you can OC them past Ultra core clockspeeds pretty easily. You then have the option of buying another later, or just selling and getting the next nvidia card :D

If you look at 2900XT Xfire vs 8800GTX SLi reviews, the 2900 is often either just behind the 8800's or infront of them, crossfire scales WAY better than SLi right now.

Are you going to be using that Samsung SyncMaster 940bf monitor? Doesn't it have a max res on 1280x1024? Either card by themselves are going to be overkill let alone if you go for crossfire.

My 2900XT lets me game 1600x1200 4xAA 8aAF no problems on BF2142 on the biggest titan servers. So to narrow it down, I would look for a single card solution rather than crossfire/SLI
