Am torn between ati and nvidia for a new graphics card, the card is going to be used predominantly for dvd playback and blu ray which will be stored on my hard drive.
have got onboard nvidia on my htpc and the playback is slightly stuttery at times and the picture quality doesnt seem quite as good as my 9800 ati card on my bedroom pc.

cheers

At the moment ATI do seem to be winning on the Video Playback front.

If starting a new system then at the moment hard to look past the 780G based boards.

However if existing then look at the 34xx series for Video Playback. As mentioned however don't expect gaming performance from this.

Although they have dodgy drivers, I would say nVidia. The ATI cards in my experience have been too noisy, which is what you would want to avoid in a HTPC.

I'vr never chosen a graphics card in that way. I've had nvidia and ATI cards. I just get whichever is the best price/performance for the amount i want to spend at the time. I have an 8800gt for that reason, it was the best card for the money i wanted to spend.

However..stability is important to me and I don't want to fuff about with drivers.

If Nvidia get good with drivers then I'll switch.
