Ive always been an ATI guy, but I have some cash free and wanted to splash out on a top of the range card,

I have been looking at a HD 4870x2 or the popular NVIDIA GTX 280 I can only afford 1 card at the moment but Im going to save for a second eventually, and then some more Ram

Any advice ?

My machine Specs atm

CPU = QuadCore Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450
Ram = 4GB Kingston
Mobo = MSI P45 Diamond
GFX = 1x HIS ATI Radeon 4870
OS = Windows Vista 64bit

get a 4870x2 and pair it up with your 4870, not sure if the P45 is 16x and 16x but use the 4870x2 for main card and 4870 for the 8x if the board is 16x and 8x,

then save up for a x48 board befor a second 4870x2 or get a x58 board and new processor.

but in general a 4870x2 is pleanty, and paired with your card it will be imence :)

edit: P45 = Dual PCI Express 2.0 x16 support ATI CrossFireX (dual X8)*

so you should be fine as it is youd get good power from both cards running side by side, a whole 3 of the best ati gpu's ;) damn thats some serious raw power.

my 4870x2 is pleanty for me

with the fact you have a P45 mobo and a 4870 why not go for just another 4870 and crossfire them
or if ati have sorted out crossfirex between the 4870x2 and the 4870 why not go in that direction
im sure im correct in saying that your current mobo doe's not support nivida in SLI

if your mobo using:

Nvidia chipset then only SLi
AMD/ATi Chipset then Xfire
Intel - either SLi or Xfire (that up to you which card)

I used Nvidia cos my board is AMD Nvidia NF 59SLI and using 2 of 9600GT XXX and enabled Sli

Cheers guys n girls, just wanted the vote of confidence before splashing out close to 400 sheets on a new card.

I have looked at oc.uk's HD4870x2 and I know threre 6-8 diffrent makes, im thinking that there isnt that much diifrence between an Asus (out of stock) and an MSI or HIS ?

Ill probably get the most expensive one being stupid (thats me) but should i just go for the mid ranged one ?

All new to me, and thanks for all the help.

If the card doesn't feature an aftermarket heatsink (and none of the 4870X2s do AFAIK) it's a reference model. So the only thing you gain with a more expensive card is a possibly better returns service, a better warranty, or more free junk in the box.

Personally I always go for the cheapest one...I have a Force 3D 4870X2.

But I wouldn't really bother upgrading if I were you....the only game that needs an X2 is Crysis.
