ATI Or Nvidia???????

Hello again people its time for another question or should i say more of your advice!

The problem I have is the agony of choice! Is it to be ATI OR Nvidia!

As we are all aware ATI have come up trumps with there latest line of graphics cards the HD 5800 Series with the first to bring Directx 11 support etc etc. And where is the new line of the supposedly Nvidia 300 Series is anyone's guess!

I shall hold my hands up and say I have been an Nvidia supporter for many years but about 18 months ago when when some of us bravely took the Windows Vista plunge ATI again were the first to bring us Direct x 10 support. So after many years of using Nvidia I decided to go down the ATI root, also at the time I had an ATI Crossfire motherboard so it kind of made sense.

I bought myself the ATI Radeon HD3870 (HIS Manufactured). Good card or so I thought, after about 14 months of use it completely died! I was very annoyed at this especially as I didn't do much gaming with the darn thing due to lack of any exciting games and absolutely no overclocking of the card!

Well because of this unfortunate situation I quickly reverted my choice back to Nvidia and purchased the Nvidia 9800 GT as a quick replacement, which may I add I have had no problems with so far!

ATI is here with the new 5800 Series! Its looking very good! Also future proof with Direct X 11 support!

The question is this!!!! Wait to see what Nvidia brings with the supposedly 300 Series? Or put my bad experience behind me with ATI and go for the 5800 Series?

All a bit long winded this isn't it? To much coffee this morning I think!

So basically you had one duff card and are writing an entire manufacturer off altogether?

When I was still using nVidia cards a few years ago I bought a new Geforce FX 5200 that was duff out of the box - these things happen and don't really have a huge bearing.

Tried ATI once and the drivers let it down so went back to Nvidia but i too am being swayed once again by the 5000 series as the look good but will wait to see what the Nvidia 300 series brings.

Can anyone tell me if ATI drivers are still awful or have they sorted their act out.

The Nvidia card range is probably a good 6 months away. When it launches, ATI will probably also launch the new refresh of their current 5800 range. Oh, and 6 months after that, ATI are due to launch a completely new GPU architecture which may or may not be awesome. It's an unfortunate fact of life that when you buy a new card, there will be something better along in 6 months time. If your current card is not doing what you need it to, then upgrade. If it's doing ok then sit tight for a while.

Well im certainty not going to write off ATI altogether. And I wouldn't put one bad experience put me off.

But the fact still remains that I have had at least 6 Nvidia cards and not one failure. I have had one ATI card and it was dead within 14 months!

Will agree on the comment with driver issues with ATI cards, I also had nothing but constant driver issues with the ATI card I had.

But the arguent will swing both ways for sure, Im sure there has been many owners of Nvidia with its fair share of problems.

The resolution I intend on playing games in will be 1920x1080 so either way I go the graphics card has got to have some sort of power.

The ATI 5800 Series is looking very tempting, Im guess its down just to having patience and see what the Nvidia 300 Series brings and just way up the odd between the two.

But again ATI are always going to wins hands down with the pricing! There is no argument that you pay over the odds for a high spec Nvidia Card then an ATI Card with equivalent spec and sometimes higher spec!

going by the comments i've highlighted it would seem you are still going to choose Nvidia. Having 1 bad experience should never put you off something.

The 5870 is a fantastic card and super fast for a single GPU. Yes Nvidia maybe faster but i can guarentee you'll pay top dollar for it which wont make it the best bang for buck

They never have been awful...never had a problem with them myself, problems I had were down to a poor overclock...

They WERE awful a long time ago. I remember back when I had my 9800 pro 128mb, they were incredibly bad. Now I think they've got their act together.

Back on topic, I'd wait mate and see what happens when the GTX300 card are released as to whether it drops prices on the current ATI's or if they perform a lot better etc... 9800GT isn't a bad card and will last you at least a year.

Both have their driver problems, so no one can say Nvidia are better, as look at their 190 series, completely ****** all those, everyones stuck on the 185/6's, so i wouldn't go by drivers, as both the same at the end of the day, you get probs with both.
