Hi guys,

Making a venture for a new GPU

Cant decide between Nvidia 400 series or ATI 5870
the main use will be gaming but im also intrested in starting up folding and i hear Nvidia cards are better for this?

Any advice would be good and i have about £350 to spend

Cheers,:D

If £350 is your maximum budget then i'd go for a 5870. 400 series will be fast as blazes in F@H with the new client, but you'd really want to get a 480 to beat a 5870 on the gaming side of things. It just depends what your priorities are, gaming or folding tbh.

Cheapest 480 here is £390 which isn't too bad but it's still £40 over your budget.

I'd get the 5870 If i had your budget.

I know nothing about folding but If you want Nvidia the 470 is a very good card.Around £90 less than your budget so go for it.

at the risk of sounding selfish gaming is a higher priority to me than folding i just like the idea of folding as it helps in things like the fight against cancer etc but on a day to day basis id be gaming a lot more than folding so it looks like ati anyone give me a pointer on the best one for around the £350?

Thanks,

I would just grab the cheapest card they have in stock

or even wait for the 5850 to come back in stock and clock that to beat a 5870

The 5850 would be my choice if i were looking for a gaming card, it's the best bang for buck atm. Or go for a GTX470 and get the added folding performance for an extra ~£50 or so (actually less than £50, i was just going by OcUK's price of £280) .

If you want to fold buy a cheap 9800GT ECO :D along side a 5870 or something assuming you have 2 PCI-e slots with atleast 1 at x16 when both are populated. You really don't want a 470/480 going 24x7 folding unless you don't care about the electricity bill.
