ATI Overdrive causing problems?

Hello! 7970 here.

Recently I had a problem with dots appearing all over the screen whilst on the desktop, the PC would occasionally shut off, sometimes with the ATI driver error.

It was the same with a fresh install of windows and was sent to overclockers for an RMA, but they found no problem after running videos for 8 hours.

So now I've still been experiencing shut offs whilst playing games, haven't seen the dots appear again.

I downloaded the ATI Tool and run the stress test several times, each time the PC shut off after 30 seconds, 2 minutes. There was a loud capacitor squeal at this time, but fan speed and temps were fine.

I have found the option for 'Enable Graphics OverDrive' which is on by default - I turned it off. I have been running the ATITool stress test for 10 minutes without a reboot, the capacitor squealing is still evident but much quieter.

AMD OverDrive reports

49% activity
925Mhz GPU Clock
1375mhz Memory clock
Power 0%
65 C Temp
33% Fan speed.

Time will tell if this actually stops my pc randomly shutting, but it's looking good so far - any thoughts on this?

24mins and the squealing is very faint ..

45mins and i'm off to bed..

Although OverDrive is 'enabled' by default when you go to the tab, I have not overclocked or modified the settings for it. Just unticked it for now.

I left the stress test running over night and it was still running in the morning - although I have had long periods of gaming without cut offs too.

I have Corsair Professional Series AX850 850W Modular PSU - 80plus Gold Certified

I have 12.4 too.

My PC has been running since I last posted, but not stress testing all this time. That was just over night.

Was browsing the internet and machine cut off...

i will try updating my bios...Asus P8P67 PRO

Well I have a b2, and the latest bios I guess must be the b3.. but Asus don't make this obvious - it just doesn't work.
