Hi, I just built a new pc with a ATI 4870 x2, and have installed the catalyst 9.6 drivers.

I've never had an ATI card before and wondered should I check the 'ATI overdrive' box in control panel or is it better to leave it unchecked?

Sorry if I sound like a noob, I am :)

It can also be useful to enable it so as to gain the manual fan speed control - I have set 2 profiles up, one for normal desktop use at 35% fan speed (which is virtually silent) and one at 45% fan speed for gaming - which is fine for even a long Crysis blast and means the fan never ramps up to max as it used to on auto which was a royal pain in the ;)

On top of this, I use Asus Smartdoctor with my 2 GPU's and it allows you to set dynamic fan settings which is brilliant. So under 45c = Slow, 55c = medium etc

Is overdrive the best way to overclock these cards or is there better applications out there?

Sorry to hop in on the thread ;)

Overdrive is fine.

For some cards like the 4670 and 4770 the limits that overdrive sets are a little low, so if you get one of these cards and wanted to clock higher your best bet would be rivatuner

Within the ATi Overdrive panel I have no option to control the manual speed settings..

I have a 4870 1GB card and have updated it to the latest drivers.

Windows Vista 64-bit as well if it helps.

Thats exactly the same with mine, no manual fan speed control.

edit: Also, If I used Auto-tune in ATi Overdrive, do I have to have CCC open the keep these clocks applied, or can I not have it start up when I turn my rig on and the clocks will stay at what they were set to in Overdrive without having to run CCC in the background?

Riva Tuner doesn't seem to work in Vista x64. :(

Didn't want to open a new thread but using AtiTools artifact scanner I got no errors for 20 minutes and my temp. was 84c. Is this too hot or is this ok?

1GB 4870.
