right theres far far far too many threads floating around about G80 for comfort, so has anyone heard anything more on R600? the only 'speculation' i have heard is that it is gonna be 80nm, have 64 'full' pipelines, its shaders are much more efficient than G80s and it has some fancy 1024-bit (512-bit bi-directional) ringbus contraption giving it some utterly stupid 140GB/second bandwidth, that it only dissipates 200 - 220W (not the 300+ that was claimed) and finally that they think its coming with 1024mb onboard GDDR4 memory, not believing any of this until someone from ATI states it once and for all but its sounding promising don't you think, anyone that has heard anything more, feel free to add some information ;)

been reading on rage 3d forums that the card will be 32 real pipelines but using 64 shaders. and its not gonna be around 8800gts speeds.

ati have allways waited for nvidia to releise a card, then ati comes along with a lot better. same with amd they wait till intel releise, then they go and embarras intel with a new amd chip thats better, so i think they will be back and will be better ;)

i really doubt that ATI will be releasing a weaker card than nvidia especcially with AMD now backing them, i reckon nvidia are now doomed with AMD purchasing ATI

How i read it Amd will have nothing todo with the ati cards for a while but are supporting the mobile diplays like pda, mobile phones e.t.c Ati will manage the card side of things for pc's as it is now.

could be wrong tho.

WE could be wrong indeed, but this is also how i read it... Ultimately i think it's going to be a good move for AMD and ATI, but i duobt we're going to see anything in the near future that will show us that AMD and ATI are working in unison...

This is going to confuse me, as i have always gone AMD and nVidia.. I may very well be persuaded to turn to the dark side (:D) when R600 is released, especially as i have started to get money saved up for a decent rig.. i am much prefering the stability/reliability/compatibility of crossfire compared to nVidia's SLi..

Apparently having 64 shaders compared to G80 means squat do to the fact that ATI's shaders can do FOUR operations each compared to G80's one operation each. So "theoretically" R600 can do twice as much shader work than G80.

But we'll see ;)

it WILL be faster, thats a given, ATi wouldnt release something slower....however, NVidia will be ready with a quick fire refresh of 7800gtx 512mb proportions ;) to take back the performance crown after like 24 hours!

As long as the R600 happily takes the monopoly off the high end cards and makes the pricing more sensible i'm a happy bunny.

If the r600 is leaps and bounds over my current card then i'll do what any enthusiast has been doing since the dawn of time....

Sell Current > Buy New.

Agree with easy, the G80 refresh has already been announced, and its coming Feb around R600 time, they probably have it now waiting in the wings, its obvious they have another card lined up for when R600 hits, all anyone knows about R600 is its name :- R600 thats all, so how anyone can deduce from its name that its gona be faster than G80 i do not know, is it becuse 600 is a bigger number than 80, bugger the specs (which no one knows) its the number, its bigger than 80, so it is faster. :p

With that theory the DFI Infinity motherboards should be amazingly quick then :D

Except in the case of the Rad 9700 Pro, Ati pulled the carpet well and truly from under Nvidias feet with that, the FX series was still months away, and ended up being rushed and became a big steaming pile of do-do's. Also AMD have nothing coming soon that'll take the performance crown from Core 2 Duo. So all in all your argument was wrong on all points.

By the time R600 appears NV will be ready to release another card! :p
