ATI Radeon 4870 X2 Installation

Quick question about the installation of the ATI Radeon 4870 X2 graphics card...

I have a Enermax ELT620AWT PSU, the 2 connectors I currently have for my old graphics card are both 3-pin, but the new ATI Radeon card itself seems to have a 3-pin socket and a 4-pin socket.

My question is, am I ok plugging in my previous two 3-pin power cables, or do I need to connect a 4-pin cable into the 4-pin socket?

The 3-pin cable fits the 4-pin socket on one side no problem. But I daren't turn it on just in case...

Hmm, I'm getting a general vibe around the net that using a converter would be possible, but not recommended. Something about 6-pin being 75W and 8-pin being 150W.

Corsair 750w will do fine. Also gives you a bit of headroom for any extras you might have there

If the 6->8pin convertor wasn't recommended, would they even provide it in the first place?


I've not read anything about the cables being different voltages, just that the 2 extra pins are grounds, which you can botch from another cable with that type of connection.

That's just it, an adapter wasn't provided with this MSI one.

Better to be safe than sorry though with something costing this much
