ATI Radeon 8.1

My 3870 just arrived and is going in tonight. I went for it because the cheapest 3870 is 23% cheaper than the cheapest 8800GT and still gives extremely playable performance with bells and whistles at my res.

a 30MB hotfix? Do I install it on top of 8.1 or instead of 8.1?

It wont matter. It will simply install the driver and old CCC package if not installed already. So you can install it after installing any other driver, or install it clean.

running 3Dmark at stock on a 3850 I get 100 points more than when using 7.12. BUT!! when using ccc overclocking card to 720/950 I get 200 points less :s.
Any idea what the bejesus is going on there anyone?? bit puzzled. Btw temps are fine under 80c.

hmm, wonder why they can;t fix that problem for x1900xt users?

just read this review here: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/sapphire_radeon_hd_3850_ultimate_3870_atomic/page11.asp

3870 gets slapped up by a 8800gt in every test by a large margin. have to wait for the cost of a 8800gt to come down. and gonna wait for the 9600gt to make its appearance.

you call 10-15% a large margin? you can bios and volt mod a 3850 to beat an 8800gt and its nearly half the price of an 8800gt, yes rthdribl also makes it jump to 3d speeds, it wont work with older cards because they werent designed to be able to do that, it was new technology at the time, they have now perfected it, the best card to get just now is the 3850, it gets 15.5K in 3dmark o6 when overclocked, what does an 8800Gt get? and remember the price difference too

hmm, i heard that if you overclock over the cards limit it actually lowers the score. i had the same problem with my x1950gt, at 580/1300 (defaults 500/1200) i scored less than the defaults.

SHAKES FIST AT MARC

Didnt notice that before... CANT TAKE MY EYES OFF IT NOW. WTF?

EDIT:

Only appears when other Windows are open.

If you click "Show Desktop" or "Windows+D" it goes away.

How damn anoying is this, and completly pointless as well!

What a pasting.

The X2 might not be much of an increase over 1x GT if you think about it then, as its gota add all those frames back to 1x 3870 to match the GT, then add more to beat it.

Take Crysis there for instance, the 3870 is over 12fps slower, so that means the 2nd one on the X2 has to add those frames just to match the GT, then its gota add more on top to beat it.

here is the other benchmark page, i knew the 8800gt was quicker than the 3870, but i did not know it was so far ahead in terms of speed. may well be worth the 150 quid for a 8800gt insted of the 130 quid for a 3870.
but will wait for the 9600gt and see how things progress.

i bet you gurusans 3850 beats any 8800GT score on 3dmark 06 from this forum and the 3850 can be had for less than £100, and his overclock can be achieved by following a few simple steps

Not sure if it's the latest drivers (but I think it was there with 7.12 as well), but can't help noticing the very squared 'fog of war' in Company of Heroes, and to some extent the very blocky reflections in the water in Oblivion (i.e. bridge reflections). Get some texture flickering (grass shadows most apparent ) in Oblivion as well. Am I the only one?

Actually there are quite a few 8800GT cards that have scored more than me. There's no doubt that the 3850 is an awesome budget card and can outperform an 8800GT if overclocked.....but if you can afford it you can just pick up an 8800GT and overclock that and leave the 3850 way behind .

lol.. firingsquad are the most nVidia loving fanboys in the world. I would never trust a review from them!

That is on old drivers.

On average CF 3870's are +/-10% the performance of SLi GT's. Due to the simple fact CF scales FAR FAR better than SLi does.

The only game they seem to loose out badly is Lost Planet, but as that is a really badly coded port I think we can let them off on that one.

So not only does CF 3870's catch a GT, it is almost on par and sometimes faster than SLi GT's.
