ATI, graphics products group of Advanced Micro Devices, on Tuesday officially released the world’s first graphics processors made using 40nm process technology. The new chips enable very high graphics performance at lower costs as well as with relatively low power consumption.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 and HD 4860 graphics solutions are based on the code-named M97/RV740 chip that features 640 stream processors, 32 texture units, 16 render back ends and 128-bit GDDR3/GDDR4/GDDR5 memory controller. The new graphics chips can operate at relatively high speeds without breaking thermal budget and deliver rather high performance. Functionality of the novelties is very similar compared to their desktop brethren, e.g., they support DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 3.0 feature-sets, hardware-accelerated high-definition video playback and so on.

“People now decidedly prefer mobile PCs, and innovations like this 40nm mobile GPU show AMD is uniquely positioned to make the best entertainment experiences of desktop PCs possible in a notebook. Laptops that feature these tiny, powerful but efficient graphics engines can run today’s most demanding game titles at beyond 1080p HD resolution, or playback full 1080p HD video with high energy efficiency thanks to ATI PowerPlay and 40nm process technology,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager of graphics products group of AMD.

Now that IS impressive IF the video is correct and translates to real world performance and IF they can bring it to market at a moderate price/quickly; a mobile chip thats faster than a 4850....now that'd damn nice!

Given the supposedly lower power/heat requirement I wonder if these would be available in 15" laptops; because if you combine these with a decent P8/9 series processor, 4GB ram and a 7200RPM HDD and you're going to have a beasty 1680x1050 gaming laptop!

Looks like they're going to be a good bit faster than NV's current 9800M chips.

Mian interest is now when's it coming to market; and whats the cost!

It's a mobile chip that's faster than the mobility version of the 4850 I think. It's just a 4850 but the clock speed is only 550MHz IIRC.

Ah yes, I missed the mobility part... my original points still stand tho, this looks like it might be the same speed/faster than the 9800M parts, and possibly a lot cheaper.

Win win for all people who game on laptops, as it helps bring better performance to a wider domain; as NV will have to make cuts on its pricing of mobility parts if the ATI prove to be a better contender and win contracts due to low heat/power and lower costs to the OEMs. Lower battery also translates as better battery life which is great :)

9300 in 3D06 is not bad at all either; considering for newer cards the test is effectively CPU limited; it'd be nice to know the rest of the spec they ran the tests with, or better yet Vantage tests; as 9300 isn't far off a desktop 4850/70 at all for 06.

Laptop GPUs are also often limited by slow memory, looks like the mobility 4860 may not suffer that issue; especially if the core is clocked well.
