Seen people say that ATI offers a better picture quality than NV, is this something thats being perpetuated by a particular time? or is it still something people believe is continuing with the new cards?

just read this as well

i've actually never owned ATI (may do soon) so I have no experience. Its nothing that would effect my decision as i'm sure its a subtlety beyond me but just interested to see others views.

Edit: sorry for spelling mistake in title :(

People used to throw this argument around all the time, but unless you game at superhigh res and snap screenshots then zoom in and stare at it for 5 min I guarantee you that you're not going to notice a darned bit of difference.

I have owned numerous cards, 6800GS, 7900GT, x1900xt, 8800GTS 640, 8800GTS 512mb, 3850, 3870 to name a few.....you can't tell the difference in image quality in any of them. However of course a more powerful card will allow you to run things at higher details and with more AA and AF.

I'd say it was true with the X1xxx vs 78/9 series, but the IQ on the current hardware is virtually indistinguishable and bloody good.

i had 2900xt two 3870xt's and now 8800gts and i must say for some reason i like ati image quality its more clearer, even in games (source games u can see the difference)

thats why looking forward to swap back to new ati cards hope performance will not fail

Id go along with this, ATi used to rule at IQ until Nvidia released the 8's, you could definately see a difference then, but not now though. :)

i have to say, when i was playing crysis this one time on an ati acard, on the final section when you are on the ship, and i looked over at the flames and smoke billowing out, i though, damn, that is some of the best smoke effects ive ever seen.

6 mnths later when i played it through again on a high spec nvidia machine, i wasnt too impressed with it at all.

Do you realise that out the box the Nvidia driver is not set to High Quality, its 1 notch down.

Set to High Quality then compare and its your eyes choice no matter what others say.

Out of all the hundreds of online reviews between NV and ATI hardware of the recent months, i don't remember one saying that one had superior or inferior IQ, now who would i listen to, respected hardware reviewers, or some guy that played crysis and thought the smoke looked better on ATI hardware, probably not having a clue what the settings were, or who needs to take a trip to specsavers.

with newer cards i dont think its too noticeable, with older cards however im talking about making the switch from a geforce 4 to a 9550, and then to a 9800pro. ati were definatly better though i tended not to notice in games rather pictures and operating system.

had some bad experiences with a x1950pro agp so i went back to nvidia.

Because if 1000 people say it is inferior but you don't that makes all of them liars? :p.

no, it doesn't, but it means if you can't tell, you don't need to worry about it. Like sound quality, i can't really tell much between a 10meg audio track and a 3meg mp3 of the same song, yet others will insist there is a big difference.

If you were to run 7900, 8800 and ATI 38x0 cards side by side using the same displays on each you'd notice that the 7900 looked duller and not so sharp as the other 2 (especially distant textures) - between the 8800 and the 38x0 you'd really have to be using a magnifying glass and be really picky to tell any difference.

Since the 8800's they dont say so before that ATI got the nod, but its down to the users eyes nobody elses, but you have to have the IQ settings in the settings set properly.

Just to be clear I wasn't having a go :p. I was just curious for you to clarify. I personally don't think there is much difference either, but then I haven't used the 8800's/9800's enough to have a solid opinion.

I have to say upgrading from a GTS320 to a 3870 that there is a definite increase in image quality. Not massive, mind you, but noticeable to the naked eye, sitting a metre and a half away with a cider in one hand
