ATI x1250 - cant install drivers in mint

I have a samsung R60 Laptop. it has the mobility x1250 ATI chip.

Now, it installs the basic drivers just fine, I get full colour 1280x800 rez and its fine.

however, no matter what I do, if I try to install the proper drivers to get 3D working... It corrupts the display and the only solution is a reinstall.

I have found that both suse and mandriva happily work 3D right off the bat, and for the last year or so, I hav been running sabayon, but I want to go Mint.

Anyone have a foolproof way of doing it?

glxinfo | grep vendor, preferably on a distro where 3d works and one where it doesn't
