ATI X800

x800s are about 2-3 years old now. Dependant upon model, some BIOS mods can be done, but only on certain cards, and its still a risk. Overclocking wise, some of them were very well reputed, including the GTO series'.

its the x800 pro if that helps, the guys who im getting it off like runs pretty much all the latest games on it as fairly high levels like. any one know of any tweaking tips or will i leave it alone?

x800pro is pretty poor by todays standards. It's the sort of card that would struggle to run medium settings on most games now. Unless its £50 or less your wasting your money down this route.

The X800pro vivo models can be modded to an X800XT PE via a bios mod. I've been using one of these cards for over 12 months now along with a 3200+ and 1gb of corsair ram and i've been able to run most games on medium settings on 1024x768 with a good stable frame rate.

I only recently kicked my x800 pro in favour of an x1900 xt. It was just starting to grind, even though I had it volt modded and clocked to stupidly high figures.

If you're getting it for free then clock it like mad. You should be able to get between medium and high (but be prepared to tweak everything, and expect it to grind now and again). Don't expect miracles 'cause the card really is end of life as far as gaming is concerned.

Well the guy im buying it off personaly runing HL2 on FULL settings at 800x600, i Barely go over 800x600 tbh, and my current card is a ati 9550 so its a good upgrade from that like and yes im getting it cheap.

Not sure how old these cards are but im getting one at the weekend, does anyone know if they can be bios updated or over clocked or anything.

depends on your screen size, but for an example if you have 2 gig of ram an X800pro will run battlefield 2 at maximum graphical settings @ 1280x1024 without AA/AF possibly even some anti aliasing, i know this to be true as my 9800pro ran bf2 on high @ 1024x768 without an issue and the X800pro is quite abit quicker.

they still have a nice amount of power too them despite there age :)

you should get full settings 1280x1024 with HL2 on that card.

try using ATi Tool to find its maximum clocks, then use a program called radlinker to associate those clocks to each game, using rad linker means the card will automatically clock up when the game starts and clock back down when it ends. or you can just do it manually using ATi Tool or ATi Tray Tools.

I've had an X800 XT since Feb 04 and i'm noticing that it can't handle a lot of the new games very well anymore so i stopped buying until i can get some money for a monster pc in 07 but sometimes it does surprise me with what this card can still do. I still use it for CS:S and it runs fine.

I could even run Tomb Raider Legend without problems.. I think that was the last though.. the games now are quite hard to run for my pc. I mean they still run but it's got jaggies everywhere.

Also i haven't OC'ed it by the way. I've never OC'ed anything.

Almost forgot i'm running it on 1024x768

I was assuming that most people run at 1280x1024. This seems to be the most common resolution going. If you run at 800x600 or 1024x768 then yes the x800pro will be a fine card. I wasn't saying that it was crap just that if you were spending £50 or more on it then there are better alternatives out there. Coming from a 9550 you should see an amazing increase in performance.

i tried to do the 800/850 bios upgrade but got lost so didnt go through with it, can anyone help? really want to zap this little card for all its got until i can afford a new one.

Unless you're pipe unlocking I wouldn't bother. Overclocking is better done through software imho.

Not meaning to be a pain, but your sig breaks the rules. It's better you take care of it than a mod :)

I am still running an X800XT for a couple of weeks, and am amazed that Oblivion can be played with reasonable details at 1366x768... still overclocking it is f.t.w :)

If possible to unlock the extra 4 pipes, most certainly do it :)
