Bit of a random post, but thought I'd post here in case anyone can help. Yesterday I accidentally pressed the £150 button on the cash machine instead of the £20 one. I thought if I just left the machine for a while, it would take the cash back and credit my account. However, it took the money but there's no sign of my account being credited yet. The ATM does not belong to my own bank. Guess I'll have to go in there tomorrow and have a word.

Thanks for listening.

LOL, you let the cash machine take the money back

could you not just have paid the money into your account later or kept the cash, might take ages to sort out.

Can't you just make a deposit through the atm? With my bank I can just put money/cheques in an envolope give it to the atm and it will get put into my account.

It will probably turn up in the next few days, usually thats the case with atms that dont belong to your bank etc. But to be on the safe side i would go in there and just let them know about what happened.

But im pretty sure the money will be credited back to your account within a few days.

lol once I pressed 200 instead of 20 [was slightly drunk :p]... crapped myself because I just knew I would end up losing half of it. Luckily it didnt have enough cash :D

whats stopping someone else taking it after you left?

If you leave a machine long enough it will take the money back in and then make a record of it to credit to your account

it's something like 30 seconds isn't it?

IIRC it gets logged by the machine that it's taken some money back in and the time, and should be sorted when the machine is next loaded or something like that.

I think you're right, its unlikely to rerack the wad, more likely to put in in a holding box so it can be checked*. If this was a quiet machine it might be a while before it gets filled up again.

* else people would be ordering 200 quid taking a couple of notes then letting the rest go back in for a recredit for the full amount

It might well take longer than a day, especially if it's a different bank, but it's probably a good idea to contact your bank about it, taking the cash back is designed as a security feature rather than as a way of paying money in!

I'd not heard of machines retracting the money if you didn't take it in time. I've found money sticking out of a cashpoint before.

TBH I would've taken the money and paid it back into my bank myself. I didn't even know the ATM sucked money back in

I stood there until it took the money back. It actually displayed a message on screen to the effect that the money wasn't taken and the transaction was cancelled. With hindsight I guess it would have been easier to take the cash and pay it back in my branch, but my own bank was at the other end of the highstreet.

reckon its possible to sneak 20quid off the top of the pile and let it take it back in?

hmmmm

No! :p

It can show back on your account as an immediate correction, however, this normally only happens when you request £x and it does not dispense the money at all. If it does dispense the money, and you don’t take it, the funds will take until the logs and balances are checked (during or prior to re-filling the ATM) at least before the funds are credited back to your account.

If the credit does not show back in to your account after a couple of days; contact your bank and they can investigate it for you (normally can be done over the phone: Non fraudulent dispense claim or similar).

Good luck :).

Having been elbow deep in a naughty ATM most of today...

Right, if it hasn't immediately recredited, it's unlikely that it will just appear. The other bank will need to 'balance' their ATM to see if there is a discrepency. The tally roll will show there is but they'll need to do this anyway, just in case. Your cash is probably sat in a purge bin as we speak, poss an ATM suspense account but I digress.

Balancing an ATM has all the fun of burning your eyelids with flaming sticks as it involves counting ALL the cash in there (and these things take LOTS of dosh) and a load of other fiddly bits like calculating the total purge since the last balance, however, compliance means they would have to do it every 28 days max, if they have robust systems anyway.

Good news is you will get it back though :)

Depends.

Little tiny ones are c. £6k

Free-standing rip-off ones vary between £10k and £40k

Limit of a proper machine: Re-issued notes should be around the £120k max mark, new notes can be around £140k mark. I would say though, it's rre to fill all the casettes right up to the top. There are generally 4 casettes ina proper ATM, but you gotta have 'em in the right order as the machine don't know the difference between 20's & 10's .
