A cashpoint machine didnt give me the amount I entered, I put £20 and it gave me £10. I rang the number on the machine and they were going to send out an engineer to it, but that won't help me get my money!

Is this not going to be really hard to prove? I immediately did another transaction for £20 and that outright failed. My bank is Natwest, how are they with handling this sort of thing?

ATM have counters though, so it will be £10 over now - make a note of the machine and dispute via your local branch of Natwest :)

There was a thread about this not long ago and I recall people saying the machine will log exactly how much it gives out and not debit your account with the missing money. Not positive though.

I checked online banking and it did debit 20 quid, but I only got a tenner.

did you check to see if your balance had only been debited £10?

oops too late

did they not tell you when you phoned how to claim ?

Some of the machines update / reverse at midnight though, but i would see your local branch on Tuesday :)

Be glad it was only £10 if you do lose it though and not £100!

To contact my bank, thats all. I'm just not really confident how this kind of claim will go. Hopefully someone employs logic somewhere and looks at the account to see the second failed transaction?

oh well i guess thats all you can do

hopefully they wont treat you like i was at a supermarket the other week , the self service till short changed me by £6 and they were like the gestapo, they thought i was trying to pull a fast one

My mum had a long running dispute over this and it only got sorted out when the bank eventually agreed that they would give her 'the benefit of the doubt'. Needless to say she changed her bank.

There has been cases in the past of staff loading the atm bins the wrong way round - 20s in the 10s slot and vice versa.

Atms are a nightmare at times though, i've had one give me fake money before, passed a tenner to the bloke in tescos and security nearly took me in. Took me weeks to get justice, the bank gave me a genuine tenner.
The tenner had a printed watermark and a forged hologram that looked like tinfoil, im amazed it slipped through the banking system.

Saying that, I have had one give me double the cash I wanted before, I emptied my bank account. Back in the student days. Pity I only had about £50 in it at the time.

I think I've found the sick perpertraitor behind all this shenannigans!...

I work for a company that makes ATM software and there are logs kept of everything that happens on the ATM. Also there's a paper journal printed of all ATM transactions and the totals are regularly reconciled by one of the bank staff with the notes left in the safe (usually done when the safe is refilled). If the ATM gave you £10 and recorded that it gave you £20, they will be able to find out, you shouldn't have to prove anything.

For anyone working in this sector, a customer getting the incorrect amount of money is considered a very serious error, and I'd expect the bank to take it seriously and do their best to find out the cause. It's really not in their interest for this to be happening as it will lose them customers very quickly, so it's likely you'll get your money back.

Just been short changed myself, I drew out $200 Aus dollars, but only received three 50notes. Spoke to the hostel staff where the ATM is, but I cant do much until I see the transaction online.

This has happened to me twice, once with the RBs and another time with Barclay's. Each time my account only got debited for the amount I received. I wouldn't sweat it until you see the transaction.
