ATM Short changed me :(

I once went to the Barclays next to my office after work on a Friday for some booze funds, asked for £120 (that wasn't all for booze!) - it said, here you go, take your cash and nothing came out. As I'm with Lloyds TSB, Barclays said they couldn't help me. Five minute walk up to my bank and they checked my account - there was a debit, and then a credit on the account - all resolved within 15 minutes.

So there's a good chance that your account is still correct - and if not, they seem to update pretty rapidly these days :D

could be worse Brother didnt get his £200 from a Tesco ATM and they said that he has to wait, so he had to stop anyone else using the machine because the security didnt want to go outside until the manager came with the key.

the worst i had though was taking the money from a corner and pulling slowly the metal slams shut and you have to pull the note very slowly so it doesnt rip that was a good 2 mins to get my cash as i cba to get more out :D

This has happened to me twice, once with the RBs and another time with Barclay's. Each time my account only got debited for the amount I received. I wouldn't sweat it until you see the transaction.

The receipt said it had issued 200 dollars tho, but yeah hope ive only be debited 150.

I work for a company that makes ATM software and there are logs kept of everything that happens on the ATM. Also there's a paper journal printed of all ATM transactions and the totals are regularly reconciled by one of the bank staff with the notes left in the safe (usually done when the safe is refilled). If the ATM gave you £10 and recorded that it gave you £20, they will be able to find out, you shouldn't have to prove anything.

For anyone working in this sector, a customer getting the incorrect amount of money is considered a very serious error, and I'd expect the bank to take it seriously and do their best to find out the cause. It's really not in their interest for this to be happening as it will lose them customers very quickly, so it's likely you'll get your money back.

This is true. Though, I maintained an ATM in my last job and we didn't keep a paper journal of each transaction. Just the amounts loaded into the cassettes at the start of the day, the amount left in the cassettes, the amount of rejected notes (i.e. notes that were crumpled or not good to go out) and the amount of retracted notes (notes which are pulled back into the machine if a customer doesn't take them in time).

In your case, the machine will have recorded a charge of £20 to you, and in theory if the atm was filled correctly in the morning, then as it only handed out £10, then it will be £10 over in the remaining notes section.

This is usually recorded to the bank as a unbalanced cash form and is sent to the bank once the atm has been balanced.

The problem lies where the person maintaining the atm realises that they can easily lift the extra £10 out, and pretend as though it didn't happen.

No :(

Still haven't been refunded either, it's only just over a week since I went into the bank though.

The best 1 i've seen is 1 in Nottingham where you entered an amount and it gave you double but DIDNT take double out of your bank. The bank was making pleas to people to give back the amount lol, like that was going to happen.

So if you pressed £20, £20 would come out your bank but 2 £20 notes would be despenced :)

I wish i had been at that cash machine :(

It's happend to me before. I phoned the bank, and within a couple of weeks they gave me the money back

I think I've found the sick perpertraitor behind all this shenannigans!...

Anyone know the nationwide contact details, I can only find phone numbers for them, Iam after a email address?

You have to ring the link and tell them, they do a check on the ATM's cash float, then you need to contact your bank and let them know whats happened.
