I was looking at the atom barbones pc on OC (currently £53.99) and wondered how it would be in the real world for a user who wants to perform the following tasks.

Internet
Email
Itunes
Excel, Word etc

Currently the user has a single core amd 64 3000+ with 1.5 ddr ram, any ideas how it would stack up against the atom pc with 2gb ram. I would intend to run the pc on win 7 or xp.

Looking to replace an old system and wondered just how cheap I could go!

Cheers!

Depends on whether or not it's the single core Atom or dual core. The single core is absolutely rubbish. The dual core is marginally better. In my opinion though the only thing Atom is good for is low powered servers and HTPCs. For a working computer I would go with a cheap Athlon II.

I jumped on Atom and mini itx when Atom was first announced and the love affair quickly soured when I realised the performance was absolutely crap.
