Alright, so my thread got deleted, my mistake for putting up a top gear video. No harm, no foul.

Anyway the point of my topic was to look at the Ariel Atom and see its incredible accelleration. Clarkson said, its faster than an atom. 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. Last time I checked thats definitely faster than an Enzo.

To be honest we are talking about opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to price. Still it seems because the Enzo is full bodied it may look like more of a practical run around but I dont know if anyone whos rich is mad enough to do that. Now the Atom is of a lower price range and even though its a bit of a kit car with no body to speak of I have this feeling anyone mad enough could use it as a daily driver.

Question, whats the Atom's top speed? as I havent been able to find that out
Is there any car out there faster? Whether that be super car price tag or less.

300bhp supercharged civic type-r engine in an Atom, which means 600bhp per tonne.

What are peoples thoughts on the atom?

Am not sure if I am right, but the fastest car, or I should say, most powerful is the Veyron.

Ah yea i think that does 0-60 in 2.5. Nice price tag too.

The British newspaper The Sunday Times measured its average acceleration from 0 to 60 at 2.91 seconds, making it the world's 3rd fastest accelerating production car available today after the $1.3 million Bugatti Veyron which reaches 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds,[1] and the Ultima GTR, which reaches 0-60mph time in 2.6 seconds.[2]

At a pure guess, I think the top speed of the Atom would be in the 160mph region as the CTR tops out at 155mph in the Civic IIRC

IIRC the top speed of the atom on PGR3 at least is 175ish. Probably due to its lack of aerodynamics at the higher speeds. (I would assume its design would promote a lot of drag at the top end).

I would also assume from around 100 onwards the extra brute power of the enzo woud held it accelerate quicker to its top end than the atom. However on a track (depending on length) I would have thought it would be very close.

you also have to consider that anything over about 150 your skin will start to get ripped off your body ;)

its all going to depend on the gear box, the ctr engine will make 155 in the civic, but thats only limited by the rev limiter X top gear ratio......

it would be interesting to try running the atom as a day to day car - technically its totally waterproof - you'd just get a little wet..... although it would be interesting to try and craft a bird cage style roof for it..... :D

edit: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ariel+atom+top+speed&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 apparently its about 140ish cause of the rubish aerodynamics

The speedo actually reads upto 130mph ;)

erm... customer courtesy car? right, thats it, i know where i'm getting my car serviced from now on! :D (although milwards.co.uk is a baby and toddeler swimming school  )

The Atom is the car I'll be getting when I get my next job hopefully (not this job I've just got but the one I have planned for my next step in the career ladder).

For 25-35k it just sounds so much fun.

I liked the Atom when i first seen it on top gear i wouldnt stop talking about it, I have not heard anything from atom lately, i would like to buy one and put a Turbo Hayabusa engine in it. If i was using a car for pure track day then i would get a Radical Sr8 or sr3 turbo but if i wanted to use it for more than track days then it would be the Atom for me.

I had one of these pass me as i was trundling along through Wiltshire recently on my way down to Dorset.

Admittedly i couldnt have given him a run for his money in the 2.0 Avensis i was driving, however seeing as its all back roads, roads that i know well and roads that you can really shovel along at, i waited till he got stuck behind a slow mover and then went for it, i had an impressive lead for all of around a couple of minutes, then in the rear view i could just see this silver dot hurtling towards me :D

i was sat with it snuggled in behind me as he obviously wanted to show me what it could do, especially being in the slipstream of the barge i was driving, the speed that it came out from behind my car was nothing short of phenomenal!

it was like he had downshifted and turned the afterburners on :D

I counted to 10 and he was that far in the distance that it could only just make it out up the straight we were on :D

Looked awesome fun,

however if i had been on the bike it would have been a much better contest :D

Overall power dictates top speed rather than power to weight. 300hp would be good for 170mph in a normal car. The atoms areodynamics are pretty crap though so it will be a lot lower than that

Yeah, the atom really doesn't look as though it's the best for aerodynamics, hence why I would guess at 150-160mph without looking at the specs, with that power too. That's where the Enzo will outshien the Atom, as it'll probably be a lot more stable with properly developed aerodynamics, so the may need less power to push it the same speed, presuming it has a better overall drag coefficient than the Atom, along with perhaps better downforce to keep the car on the road also, but will be able to use the more power on tap to go that 50+mph faster.

Incredible acceleration?

Comparable 0-300 km/h times:
Ferrari Enzo: 26,1 seconds.
Porsche Carrera GT: 34,2 seconds.
Porsche 996 GT2: 37 seconds.

"During last weekends 0-1000 meters run at the airport of Västerås,
the silver Ultima run from 0-340 km/h in 19 seconds."

820bhp in that run, has been dyno-tested to 962bhp iirc :)
