Atom vs normal cpu's benchmarks?

that's the only type of review i could find, the atom vs via

since i've never used any of them, these reviews are kinda useless to me :)

very tempted to get one of these, for a basic backup server

That's quite nice!

I would imagine most of those numbers would be reduced a fair bit if they'd benched the dual core atom board.

Just built a dual core atom board for the mrs and it's quite a piece of kit - not as good as the e7200 wolfdale ITX setup i have but not far off and a good deal cheaper! :)

I could maybe try some basic benches for you if i can get the gf off her PC for a bit. Any ideas on decent desktop benching programs?

Just depends if you want high performance - if so then higher end core tech and phenom's are the path to take.

However, they are standard desktop parts in dual and quad form - i'd expect that kind of result TBH.

Also, the Atom only has single channel memory (since it's a single stick on the board) meaning in some benches it will be limited a little.

When you look at the power usage and the cost to get these in ITX form factors the numbers are very different.

Oh, sure - there's no doubt about any of that. For use as a server, they may well be ideal.

Basically, it gets hammered in every conceivable way apart from one key area...

Considering I'm using an Athlon XP at the moment, it would probably be a huge upgrade for me, regardless! :O

nice

the power consumption is right down low, and the hard drive performance is only 9mb less than a q6600

just what i need

now to choose a psu -any ideas?, will probably make a case, possibly out of wood, wont need a cd drive, just just need a hole in the back for the backplate, can feed the powerbutton through there :)

Best option as far as i can see is a PICO psu. Can get them rated up to 120w. The Atom 330 with a laptop HDD, desktop hdd and optical drive loaded up around 65w and that was when using a fairly inefficient (70%) psu. I would say a simple system with HDD and optical drive would maybe draw 45w-50w.

Here's a pic of one:

I use a 120w version like the one pictured with a 100w power brick on my Cubit 3 system running an Intel ITX mobo with an e7200, 4gb ddr2, 3.5" hdd and dvdrw.

erm. wow!

i'd use a normal psu to install the os (due to the dvd drive), then take a usb acronis image for future installs

I also ordered a small Atom board + case to build a small server. I decided to put two CF cards in RAID 1 as 'main' disk for low power and noise... and a 160GB disk for mirroring/backups.

The review I've seen on the Atom vs a Celeron does indeed show that Atom is crap at number crunching. But heck, it's still good enough for small server works...

(check the "Small form Factor" Forum here, too)

you would have thought they would at least compare them to comparatively priced, or market segmented products, such as the Intel Celeron "C" vs the Atom, or something a bit more down to earth, such as a Pentium Dual Core T2390 (in a £300-£400 laptop). Heck these days, even £500 laptops only come with a C2D T5750 or 7200 at best.

So why compare a pure desktop CPU which isnt directly a competitor for the Atom, vs the Atom?
