Attach a portable hard drive to my phone and transfer files?

I use my phone to download movies etc. I always have to get my laptop out and attach HD and my Android phone.

With a otg cable, is it possible to transfer the files directly?

I think you'd need external power at least.

What HDD are we talking about?

SSD could work without extra power, possibly.

I've used a USB memory stick with OTG before. Doubt it could provide enough juice for a spinning disk

I use my Samsung T5 500gb on my s10+ works fine with the little adaptor you get with the phone. Usb/usbC I think it is

I have a small 500gb drive that is self powered by USB... Happy to buy a power adapter or even a new HD if needed

Yes - but I actually use a SANDISK ultra dual usb otg flash drive. Do a search.

Its a USB dongle with two ends - mini or type C USB one (choose depending on your phone) end and a standard USB the other to plug into a PC.

Not sure what phone you have, but have a look at Samsung Dex.
