Attack on NI military base

I don't see what Republicans would have to gain from this, be them dissident or not. With a scaling down and exit of operations there I can't see why anyone would want to rekindle or perpetuate the military involement there. If you're asking for theories then I'd be looking to people who are the most uncomfortable with the new peace and wanting to give reason to keep British troops over there. Relations have progressed massively there and it would be a shame for a minority to bring back a level of mistrust that has been so hard fought to overcome. :(

Terrible events happening again. Sickening act - you'll probably find that the army personnel were unarmed too.

Cowards the lot of them!

Was kinda shocked when i heard this, im only in my teens so i never really experienced much of the troubles as i was shielded from it as a child but i hope that nothing will come of this and it was a cowardly pointless attack upon innocent men (especially the 2 civilians)

I wonder if it's got anything to do with the plethora of Sinn Féin representatives that have been on the news recently denouncing the deployment of the SRR in the Province.

Unlikely. SF and the dissidents don't get on. It'll be a bunch of backward idiots with **** all better to do than cause problems.

The damn helicopters are going to keep me up half the night now.

wow, 2 dead, that's pretty bad. Hopefully this wasn't a group, and it was just randomers. Won't be particularly nice to have another 'war' on our doorstep.

Definitely looks like the work of a dissident republican group. Most old republicans are too busy dealing drugs these days to care about fighting but some are still intent on refuelling the troubles.

Sinn Fein will have to condemn this, they're part of the government up there now.

From the looks of the article the people killed were guards at the gate that came out to accept a fast food delivery. Hopefully they can track down the people responsible through the truck they used. Probably stolen but maybe they'll get CCTV footage or something.

Wow, I am totally sickened to hear this. I live under 10 miles away. Lots of local helicopters have been training here for deployment to Iraq. They had a lot of drops in to Masserene this past week apparently. I doubt very much that the 230 squadron will move to the UK now or indeed be deployed to Iraq whenever we have this on our doorstep. Absolutely shocking, sickening stuff. People here are all sickened. I really hurt inside. This is so scary so close to home. RIP.

I have a sneaking suspicion this is a kneejerk reaction from a dissident group at the news that the Reconnaisance wing of the army and MI5 are stepping up operations in NI again.

I have to say I thought the same on reading the news article.

It was only yesterday that the announcement was made about MI5 involvement. I just feel sick. I don't remember much of troubles due to my age but my goodness this is scary.

Cob, are you pretty close by? Didn't know so many NI people on here.

i know what the phrase means, but i don't know what he means by it.

Won't be particularly nice to have another 'war' on our doorstep.

I really don't see what's so hard to understand.

You made a comment about the possibility of a bad situation occuring on the doorstep of the mainland, and I made a sarcastic comment about how we'll feel sorry for yous.

You weren't expecting real sympathy from the majority of people in this thread were you?
