Hi all, my workhorse of a 360 has finally RRODed out of warranty. It's done it three times in warranty and the last time I think the motherboard was replaced with one of the newer motherboards that fit in the old cases.

I'm in the middle of attempting to fix it by cleaning it up and applying AS5 under the heatsinks (there was a MOUNTAIN of thermal paste under both chips) but I've noticed that the four small black chips around the processor which should have the crappy stick on mini-heatsinks have nothing on them. These are the chips which people used to do the penny mod on.

Is this correct? Do they not need any thermal cooling at all any more?

They are memory chips, and they don't need any cooling on them. Some 360s have thermal pads on the underside, some don't. Either way, they are not needed.

but...just cleaning it isn't going to do a lot if it's already RROD?

You'll need to bake it in the oven at least!

Drexel knows, he should be able to offer a little advise. (BTW Drex, mines still going strong! I think it's about 12-13 months, maybe more!)

Yep, do the oven trick and then x-clamps. Out of the hundreds I've done I've had maybe two or three that just would not work, so it's pretty rare.

Are the fans spinning up when it RROD's?

Pheonix: Glad to here it mate :)

Cheers guys. It's kind of a good excuse to get myself another Xbox so I'll get a new one anyway, but if I can fix this one then good, I can have one in the living room and one in one of the bedrooms :D

Can someone point me in the direction of a 'legit' X-Clamp kit, I'm sure there's a decent set on Ebay, but it's hard sorting through the chaff.

Edit: yes, the fans are working.
