ATV2 as HTPC?

Not really the same thing, atv allows you to stream from a computer to ur tv

htpc allows you to use your pc on a tv

I thought a jailbroken ATV2 running XBMC could see a NAS server and stream from that or is that not the case?

My NAS has the option for iTunes server as well from memory so does that mean i wouldnt need to jailbreak an ATV2 for it to pick up all my content?

Interests me greatly as might be getting an ATV2 for christmas

im using mine jailbroken with XBMC to stream from an HP Microserver with downloaded content.

its not quite as quick as a full PC on the gui front but can handle 5.1 MKV's in 720p or 1080p(output as 720p)

ATV 2 is not bad, and you can use it as a home media centre via converting or streaming, Airplay Mirroring makes it amazing.

IMHO it's a case of deciding what you want the device to do and then whether the ATV2 can be made to do that.

That led me to buy and jailbreak an ATV2 for our bedroom as I wanted to:

- Stream movies from my NAS

- Listen to internet radio

- Access BBC iPlayer

- Watch live TV

The last two are achieved via add-ons for the excellent XBMC media player which is installed as a menu item in the main ATV2 interface. Streaming from the NAS I do in the main ATV2 interface rather than launching XBMC, this is achieved by installing ATVFlash(black).

I'm sold on the ATV2 now as a replacement for my old Zyxel DMA-1000, can do everything that could and more which is exactly what I wanted.

Running a jailbroken ATV2 at home with XBMC, sharing content over SMB hosted on a Time Capsule over wifi.

Works very well, XBMC is definitely pre-release on iOS though. It's good, needs more polish. Locks up from time to time, and the SMB client times out every now and then.

Other than that for £99 for an ATV2, it's pretty impressive.

Hey - which add-ons do you use for watching live TV on the ATV2?

I've got a TV in my kitchen with really poor reception - was thinking of getting ATV2 there to be able to stream music and watch telly. Which channels do you get, is the interface quick to use?

thanks

You need to jailbreak the device and download the tvcatchup XBMC plugin.

http://plugins.tvcatchup.com/~xbmc/

I ran XBMC on my ATV2 for some time but found that I was getting lag when streaming high quality films. Switched to using an Acer Revo with XBMC and it is much better. Also, the amount of plugins for XBMC is endless.

There's also a tv catchup app for ios which supports AirPlay, so that's another way to get live tv on there. Not used it myself but have installed it and will give it a go shortly. As per poster above I currently use the tvcatchup plugin for xbmc, it's not been flawless but then I don't watch a huge amount of live tv.
