These are both containers, meaning they "contain" any number of different data streams. MP4 isn't a "more compressed file format" as it is just a holder for various video and audio codecs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_14#Data_streams) and the same goes for MKV.
