atx 12v connection query

just a quick question regarding the atx 12v connection, i know there is 8-pin extension cables but say if i bought 2x 4-pin 12v extension cables and used them together to extend the 8-pin 12v on my psu to the motherboard would it be okay? not sure if the cables crossover differently for each of the two 4pin and just wanted reassurances it would be safe to do this.
 
If I recall from when I was installing my power supply each end of said connector has a different pin layout to prevent things being plugged in the wrong place, so using two 4 pin ones wouldn't work. But I'd wait for confirmation of that because I'm not sure.
 
yeh i think you are right, looking at a photo now because i cba to turn off and unplug mine, the 4x (square/square with slants ) pins on the left would have to be the same layout as the 4 on the right for what i was wanting to be possible.

yeh i know i was just curious and already have a 4pin one and was considering just buying another
