ATX 12v issues

I'm helping my brother with a PC he's just built.

THe main isssue is with the 12v power for the motherboard. With the 6 pin or 6 plus two pin connected it just will not power up.

With the 4 pin connector it works fine. Can someone offer an explaination of how this should work and what the different configurations are for?

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P
Power supply: CIT 650UT
Graphics asus eah4670 1GB

I really appreciate any help anyone can offer.
 
It sound's like you are trying to plug a 6 pin pci-e power plug into the motherboard. This is a bad idea. You should have a single 4 pin, a pair of 4 pin plugs that join together or a 8 pin plug.

That's a terrible cheap and nasty poor quality psu by the way. Never ever skimp on a psu as it's the single most important component of a pc.
 
It's not one of those ones that blows up and sets fire is it?

Is the PSU going to work or is it a case of it's that bad it's going to cause damage?

I presume the 6+2 pin connector is for some high powered graphics cards and is plugged directly onto them?

They are of a extremely poor quality. Poor psu's never output their claimed wattage, are innefficent and when they fail are more likely to do it in a spectacular fashion, often taking other components with it.

Depending on the cpu you are using a quality 400w psu would be more than enough for that rig.

PSU is an AMD phenom ii x4 810 2.6Ghz.

it may well be fine, but i wouldnt stick too much more in that pc. I had a q-tec 550w back in the day (when i was like 15 and on my first ever build) Did me proud for 2 years as it didnt blow up etc, but then i wa sonly drawing about 250-300 w using a 6600gt and a single core etc. Added a 7950 so put the load up to around 450 and it would always spike and kill one outpu ton the card (went through 3 of them before i remembered id had to put the q-tec back in because of the gayness that was hiper type-r 580w's).

So yea, dont put any high end componants on it. Get one of the corsair/be quiet/enermax/pc power and cooling/ocz/another brand that seems to be around £1 per 10 watts of power.
 
Judging by the specs, it isn't as bad as some.. it's about equivalent to a good 500W. But you don't know how accurate the specs are, and generic PSUs as a rule shouldn't be used on higher-end systems.
