I'd like to use an ATX power supply to just power some hard drives, so will just be using the +5v and +12v lines.

Will this cause a problem within the PSU as I won't be using any of the -ve or 3v outputs?

Thanks

Should be fine - most modern PSUs will run with no load anyway, but even if not then 12v and 5v are normally the "main" rails which you will be loading anyway.

How are you starting the PSU?

Interesting. Look just like a relay powered by the molex connector and probably just pulling ps-on to ground.
