Audacitry not opening entire file?

Hi, trying to cut a section from a piece of music with audacity which i have happily done before, however, now it wont open the entire piece of music, only the first 0;6 seconds of it, the mp3 file plays on itunes and windows media and VLC but audacity can only get the first second of it...anideas? if not can anyone suggest an alternative programme asap
