Just driving home from Kent in my bros 2000 reg 1.6 petrol A3 and he's having strange issues in 2nd and 3rd gear. When he's sat in the gear driving the cars seems to stutter until he accelerates but its fine if he's accelerates through the gears. The car was MOT'd 2 weeks ago and serviced 6 weeks ago.

Do you mean it happens when he is in 3rd, lets off the throttle, then when he goes back on the throttle it stutters?

VAG coilpacks are made of cheese, may be a good place to start, I would imagine that engine has an actual pack rether than pencil coils?
 
If he drives along in gears 2 and 3 it starts to stutter until he decides to increase the acceleration and then the stuttering goes. Started doing it yesterday morning.
