Hi all

My girlfriend would like to buy an Audi A3.

Has to be insurable (no more than a grand really) for a 20/21 year old female with no accidents / convictions in an OL16 postcode

Budget for the car will be £4k.

she would prefer a 3 door.

Isn't bothered massively whether its petrol or diesel, but is leaning towards diesel for tax & running cost reasons.

Is there anything to look out for on A3's in this price range, which model(s) would you guys suggest?

I know absolutely nothing about audi's myself, this is why i ask.

Does she specifically want an Audi A3? Will she consider a Golf or Ibiza? She should be prepared for running costs. Any parts that may need replacing could be expensive.

Originally she wanted a golf, but has changed her mind to an A3, given good enough reasoning it may change back!

Is there any reason you might pick a golf over an A3 ?

To quote her: "I want an Audi! It is for my 21st so I want a sexy car"

Her only other preference is that it is either black or dark metallic grey

If she is bothered about saving money on tax (which she wont with a 2000 A3 because its not CO2 assessed for tax) then she probably doesnt want a 10 year old Audi.

She's been looking at 2001/2002 A3's, specifically the diesel variants - I presume post 2000 models will all be taxed based on CO2 emissions:

2001 1.9 TDi has CO2 emissions of 132 g/km (Tax Band E - £120.00/y)

At the moment she drives a T Registered Renault Clio 1.2 (£120/y Tax), so presuming she can get a 2001 diesel car within budget the tax shouldn't be an issue.

Not sure how accurate parker's used prices are on these but...

Says that a 2001(Y) 1.9 TDi (SE) is:
£3390 (Private Good Condition)
£3930 (Independent Dealer)

so within budget, does anyone have access to a glass's guide to confirm these values ?

Think she has decided on a 2001 1.9TDi A3, question is.. which trim level would be best to go for?

SE has climate control and leather seats, but is there anything else3 you get from this?

Also, is there anything to look out for on these when buying? and anything that might cost the earth if it goes wrong - other than the turbo?

Are you sure you want to spend £4000 on a 9 year old 110bhp diesel hatchback? I mean how desperately does she want that Audi badge given a Focus or something would be half the age?
