Hi all,

I have been looking for a new car - I have my sights set on an Audi A3. My budget would be around £4-5k. Ideally petrol.

Before I delve deep into this, is there anything I should be looking for specifically with these cars? E.G, fail points, rust spots etc...

Thanks :)

I can't help but feel that this isn't going to represent a particulary great value purchase.

What's drawing you to the A3 exactly? What else have you considered as alternatives?

To be honest they are solid cars. I bought my 2007 a3 tdi with 113k miles on the clock a few years back and it’s been faultless. It’s sailed through the last few mot’s without any advisories

They seem very overpriced for what they offer op especially in petrol form as the majority seem to be diesel. The model your looking at for that price range is quite dated now and looks it. They are bland inside and the engine choices are limited.
Your budget would probably get you a 2008/9 A3 at a push. I would take something newer and fresher looking like a mk3 2011 Focus for the same price

This is the biggest problem. It doesn’t get you anything considerably different to the car that was released in late 2003 (53 plate onwards), other than a few interior tweaks and a single piece front grille.

If it had to be an A3, it might as well be an older, cheaper one. Or as said, get something different and newer.

Exactly apart from the facelift on the front the rear doesn’t look any different to the really old models and looks so dated now. And the interior is bland.
Just had a quick browse on AT at the prices actually and your talking between 4-5k for a poverty spec 2008. The majority of petrol choices seem to be the pathetic 1.6 100bhp that takes about an hour to hit 60. If you want a S line with a decent 2.0T engine your talking 5-6k for 10yr old example. Just really poor value for money. Op could get a good hot hatch for that price range or a newer better specced car like the mk3 Focus

I owned an 08 S line 1.8tfsi in 2016. Getting straight to the point, these cars are absolutely brilliant when they work. Mine was pretty well specced (heated leather, bluetooth, parking sensors, dsg, autolights etc) and offered respectable performance, the 1.8ts are pretty rare (in this form) so I doubt you'll find a decent one(let alone with a dsg) so my money would be on you likely ending up with the 2.0 or 3.2 (if its a petrol you're after which can achieve mid to high 20s) don't pay over the odds just because it comes well specced, these can still shockingly be found for more than 6k, especially with low miles.

My general view is that these are getting old now, so be prepared to deal with a multitude of small non expensive issues which is I suppose testament to the age: Condensation in the tail lights, the rear wiper (google this), replacing screen wash hoses, excessive oil consumption, leaks and rattles. 225/40/18 tyres can be pricey if you're not used to paying £90+ p/c.

As well as the minor faults, they are still capable of doing significant damage to the wallet - timing chain (£700) and the mechatronic if you're looking for an auto (around £2k). With that said, the £5k outlay for a 10 year old A3 now jumps to around £7700, should both happen during ownership which puts the value for money aspect into perspective when looking at what you could buy if you pushed that to £8k. As above, these were 'designed' in 2003... so its pretty darn old.

They look nice and generally perform well but I'd go as new as possible for the money within your performance criteria. The car will depreciate, but not the running of it.

Rear wiper motor failure is quite common, due to a poorly designed boot seal which allows water ingress or something like that. Hence why you see so many with the wiper stuck vertically I guess :p

Rear wiper motor failure is normally due to the wiper jets getting blocked. This then dumps all the screen wash inside the motor.

Over time the screen wash will then make its way down to the tailgate and cable loom triggering boot lock and alarm issues.

I ran a high-mileage 8P S3 for a year and nothing went wrong other than bits under the bonnet, but I knew about about most of them when I bought it. I don't think there's a lot particularly wrong with these cars, but some TFSIs drink oil like there's no tomorrow and the non-TFSIs engines are slow.

Are there wiser purchases out there for £4-5k? Yes. The A3 is solid, but ultimately unrewarding to drive and the tech will be horrifically outdated by now.

Thank you for everyone who has chipped in!

I have a Hyundai Accent for now and just would like a newer car in all honesty. I have been looking at Ford Focus's as well as things like Kia Rio's.
Basically my requirements are for a car which is about the same size as my current one, with a bit more power and i'm happy. I would prefer a reliable car as I do around 12k a year in milage.

I just quite like the look of the A3, especially the older shape. Not sure why, but I actually quite like them!

I had a Tdi from this era and it was the least reliable car I've ever owned. Had it 6 months before the turbo exploded and then it ****** oil everywhere. Got rid after that. Luckily it was still under warranty :D

Will second that (although mine was a 2.0TFSI) ... whilst customer service at my local Audi dealer was excellent and the coffee tasted good, it spent far too much time in there for random niggles that I've not had on a car before or since.
