Hello OCUK petrol heads,

I'm currently considering moving to the above named car, more precisely I would like the following spec:

Audi A4 B7 Avant facelift 2006 onwards
2.0tdi preferably the 170ps engine, but I don't mind the 140ps too.
Less thank 70k miles
S Line spec, with the bose sound system :)

Budget = Around £10k.

If anyone can give me some sound advice on what to look for, what to avoid etc, that would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for something more economical than my Ford Focus ST, and something with a bit more prestige too, as I would now like to step away from the asbo scene!

Also any other cars you may wish to bring to the attention too, I have looked at the BMW E90 320D, but the Audi just seems to appeal to me more, and the BMW seems to cost more?

No no no no do not buy an automatic A4 with a small engine as they have the chronically unreliable multitronic box. It's terrible.

Common problems include failure of the gearbox ecu, which costs over £1k at a dealer or expect to pay around £600 at a decent gearbox specialist.

Just the auto.

Oh and 2.0 TDI Engines suffer from DMF failure, Oil Pump failure, Injector failure, I'm sure there is more!

I've read about these issues, but isn't the case that there are so many of these engines around that overall they are pretty reliable and sound given there use in VW's, Audi's, Seat's and Skoda's?

Yet the odd one or two who have issues are escalated due to the car being a minority force in the online forum world? (there are hardly any threads about the said car)

No, DMF, injector and turbo issues are common across all modern diesel engines.

Think there is a DPF in there as well?

Modern diesels are nasty things with all sorts of complex and unreliable add-ons designed specifically to meet emissions regulations and get themselves into company car tax brackets. All there for the first owner without any regard for the people buying them used.

What's DPF?

Also quite a few diesels tend to cough up large bills around the 50-70k miles region.

10-12k per year

So in theory a sensible petrol engine is an option. But I like the idea of a grunty diesel with torque.

Just go for a 2.0TFSI instead. 200bhp, lots of torque, no clatter. If you like the idea of a grunty diesel why on earth are you considering the TDI 140? Coastal drift is faster than one of those! There is nothing grunty about it at all.

What sort of MPG am I to expect from that engine? The whole purpose of getting the diesel is I want the quoted 45mpg...

I bought my wife a new one, a 2L TDi 140bhp S-Line saloon which she had for 3 years and it was faultless and didn't need the garage outside of servicing, fuel and tyres. It was however dull as ditch water and though economical it was flawed in a number of ways that really put me off the car and coming from an ST which is fun I would suggest the BMW will be the more rewarding car, you will bore of the Audi very quickly once you get over the nice interior and solidity of build.

1: Damping was awful on the S-Line, smallest bumps went through your spine, my RS4 is smoother!
2: Steering was lifeless like few cars I have driven and the brakes complemented that and not in a good way.
3: Never got comfy in the seats, don't know why, just didn't.
4: Understeer of epic proportions.

They look nice, they are well bolted together and woe stories aside I suspect very reliable but not a patch on the BMW when it comes to driving and coming from an ST I suspect this might be an issue for you. Audi's idea of a sports car in most of their models is stiff suspension and zero damping.

You do 10,000 miles a year. Why are you so bothered about the quoted 45mpg?

The 2.0TFSI has a combined of 36mpg. Against this 45mpg you quote for the diesel, this means you will spend a whole 20 quid a month more on fuel.

20 quid.

A month.

If 20 quid a month is anything more than a trivial amount of money than buying a £10,000 Audi probably isnt a good idea in the first place.

What about other running costs?

Tax
Insurance
Servicing

I figured the diesel would be better...
