I'm just looking at 04/05 A4s at the minute and am trying to get an idea of the best all round engine. It will be an avant and purchase date of June-July next year, but am doing the research now.

I was thinking maybe the 2.5tdi, but it seems a bit of a pointless engine. Not very economical for a diesel and not very quick either. Is the 1.8T better or is there an alternative diesel or petrol engine to go for.

Road tax is not a problem, fuel economy would be nice but I'm not part of the OMG it must be a diesel brigade and do the diesels handle significantly worse than the petrol.

Also Quattro.... yes or no?

edit.... or as an alternative

but why are all 3 Series estade 320ds?

1.8T IMO.

The V6 is barely any faster but drinks like a fish, the 1.9TDi is too slow, and the 2.5 isn't that economical.

3.0 Quattro Sport. Seriously - they are so much cheaper than the more economical engines that unless you do loads of miles you'll not be spending much more on fuel.

The rest of the A4 range just seems a bit dull. Capable, but dull.

Gotta be the 1.8T. Ive got one and its a awesome engine, quiet, smooth and fast - when remapped it gives very similar figures to the 3.0 but without the fuel economy ;)

Good point Toker the newer shape B7 2.0T are not much more expensive to buy and from next year the road tax will be cheaper than the 1.8T B6.

Speadfreak - do a search for Audi-sport and have a read through the forum.

I suspect, espeically given he linked to a £5k 3 Series, he is mostly considering the 2001-2005 shape A4 which wasn't supplied with a 2.0T.

As for Quattro:

Positives - More fun on back roads, heavy right foot is useable in all weather conditions.
Negatives - Worse fuel economy, slightly slower, goes through rear tyres quicker.

if it's a B6 then the 1.8T or 3.0, but the 3.0 is thirsty as hell.

Personally I'd get a 1.8T then remap it, so you get both power and economy when you need it

TBH the budget will be around the 10-12k mark. The BMW was just an example of the 320d but the new shape will be around our budget for nex summer I'd imagine, although I would prefer a 330d so will wait and see on the market.

So, as for the 1.8T vs 2.0T in the audi.... what are the advantages disadvantages in terms of long term reliability, overall cost of ownership etc...

I will have a look at the 3.0 as well but it may be overkill for what we need. Ideally a family sized car that can carry my mountain bikes and other bits and bobs, sports gear etc...

Thanks again for all your help, I'll pop onto the audi forums too.

Put me in the toker club, A4 2.0T S-Line should be dooable next year and will be very nice. I would however only buy one if somebody deletes all the 330i's between now and then.
