So im about to buy a used car

Audi A5 3.0 Quattro Diesel with a V6 engine, Auto and the face lift 2011 version

vs

Merc E Class Coupe 350 (3.0 V6 engine Diesel) 2011

Both going for 10k, my bedget is £10,000 £11,000 absolute max

I hate car finance and lease hire,

Both vehicles have an acceptable 100k on the clock, nothing for a bullet proof 3.0 V6 engine, both cars are miles ahead of my previous car, petrol VW Golf GT 2.0 2004 plate (SCRAPPED had it for 13 years)

Both are auto, I know the Audi is a 4WD Quattro, not sure on the merc though

Oh took a A5 3.0 for a spin, honestly its so fast compared to my Golf, takes off like a airplane

SO what car would you choose?>

I'm not sure a 9 year old diesel can be described as such.
thats what the seller has described it, he said that the engine is bullet proof meaning its of excellent quality with no issues, he said that the 3.0 engines are much better and reliable than the 2.0 engines and the apparent dreaded previous 2.7 engines.

the other choices are a Ford or Vauxhall 2015/16 models, newer yes but vs a German made car?

Well yeh of course he will say that, he wants to sell the car :p. He’s not going to tell you what issues he’s had etc etc.

Is this satire?

If you're buying a 100k miles 9 year old diesel for reliability, then you need to review your choices again, me thinks.

If you want advice on a new (used) car, then it would be helpful to know what your requirements are, other than the budget. E.g. why a diesel, are you concerned about ongoing costs, is the badge important to you, or are you just after a well made and relatively quick ride?

How long are you planning on keeping the car, are you gonna do any maintenance work yourself, what are the must haves, does it need to be a coupe?

A little more info might result in more appropriate answers.

My previous car was a W212 e-class E350. I traded it in with 85k on the clock and had a feeling some big bills might have hit me. Problems included the turbo seal leaking and the particle filter was showing signs of being nearly full.

Bigger usually is more reliable, but modern diesels with things like DPFs and all other kinds of filters are just asking for trouble at high mileage.

A solid V6 or V8 petrol will last longer, but obviously cost more on fuel (though modern ones are a lot better).

well the main reason why the guy is selling his car is because he has been banned from driving for 1.5 years

so he says to pop along with my licence as he cannot test drive the car

hes being honest about it, he states the car is perfect and had the clutch done 18 months ago on a £2000 job. it still has warranty

so basically im looking for somthing quick, hence the 3.0 engine, fed up of driving my wifes car, trying to overtake a truck and taking 30 seconds just to speed up for the overtake

Also style and comfort, the A5 fits the bill, German cars are reliable, though the Fords and Vauxhall are probably just as great, ive seen for 10k you can get some pretty newish cars 15 plate

I can manage the services costs, as a close friend and a relative own a garage, independent garage

Yes it spooks me getting a car and then the engine dying but honestly thats there with most used cars, i cant afford to buy brand new or a approved used car from a official garage

Well if that's what the seller said then why are you here? That seller obviously knows his stuff. Did the other seller say that? If not, you know what your answer is.

That's a very naive mindset. He's trying to sell his car, of course he's going to tell you what you want to hear!

If you're going to buy a car like these, keep a bit of money aside for repair bills, as they're highly likely to occur.

If as you say in your main post both of these cars are Auto how come the clutch was done ? Or has another car popped up I missed.

People often refer to diesel engine cars as 'bullet proof' - sure the engines might be, but the associated turbos, DPF filters etc etc ... certainly aren't.

The only diesel engines with true bullet proof'ness are the old non-turbo units in old Peugeot's and Citroen's :p

Sounds like the seller is either clueless or just feeding you what he thinks you want to hear, new clutch for example - on an automatic transmission?

Personally, I’d look newer and not necessarily 100k mile diesel German execs, unless your prepared for potentially big bills on the horizon - go and try a few other cars, don’t let the comparative difference in performance between your old car and say the Audi sway you too much, I’d expect it to be vastly quicker than an old shed of a Golf as will many other potential options your budget will easily get you into.

Yes and one of those accessories going bang can kill the rest of the engine :/

Depends on how they have been driven, if a diesel has been doing primarily motorway miles where the DPF will consistently regenerate you are probably fine.

If it has done a fair amount of cold driving short distances you are likely screwed.

OMG OMG

Just done a HPI check

The cheeky K**t has OUTSTANDING finance on his car!!

The report states that if the car has outstanding finance on it then even though I buy it for 10k+ ill never be the owner

I swear down this is the 2nd time some one has tried to pull out a sly on me

3 weeks ago I paid £250 cash to pay a deposit on a beautiful A5 S5 conversion, the guy took me for a drive and was so nice, based on that trust i paid him £250 cash, it was agreed he would see me in 2 days to complete the sale, he has since disregarded my calls and has not returned my deposit cash

This was 3 weeks ago, I text him that I will call the police but still he has ignored me

Now this guy is trying to sell me a car which he bought on FINANCE, honestly this is a nightmare, I cant go to a showroom, used dealers are above my budget, im gonna have to lower my specs and go to a reputable used car dealership. Ive been using public transport for the past 4 months and I hate it,

I must not let my desperation in running for the next car that available on the bay.
