Somewhere I shouldn't be!
Hi guys,

I am looking to replace my current shed of a car (Mondeo) and have been casting my eye over Audi A5s.

I think I have found one, they want £14K and it is an Audi A5 2.0 TDI S LINE 5DR 170BHP, however it has 105,000 miles on the clock, it is an ex-company car, with 1 owner and has service stamps etc, it is a 2010 plate.

Going to view the car later today.

One thing that is preying on my mind is the mileage, my current car has only done 88K miles and I have had it 10 years.

Does the mileage really matter on a car of this type? With it being a diesel as well? Just looking for some opinions and anyone's experiences with A5s.

Thanks. :)

Seems expensive for a 2.0 TDI with over 100k. However a 1 owner car and 3 years old suggests most of the miles have been spent on the motorway. The 2.0 TDI VAG engine will do many more thousands of miles with the correct maintenance, however I'm sure you'll need to budget for non routine maintenance i.e. turbo.
Is it well specced inside? When was the last service done? Do the brakes and tyres have plenty of life left in them?

I don't mind high mileage cars but why would you want to spend £14,000 on a 100k mile 2 litre Audi? High mielage cars are great when:

a) You are confident that any issues are reasonably inexpensive to fix and the car itself is not megacomplex
b) You are happy that you are the last person who is going to pay any sort of actual money to buy it

A £14k A5 doesn't seem to fit either of these.

Buy an A4 instead. It's the same car but with more doors, but you can get a better example for £14k.

If that's the same engine that's in my A4 it's not cheap to repair.

Mine had 76k miles and 1 owner and so far it's non service parts I've had replaced are 5 fuel injectors, fuel pump, fuel relay and a vacuum manifold pump. Luckily most of which I didn't have to pay for, as it's cost around £6k.

Standard running costs have been pretty good, in 30k miles I've only just replaced all 4 tyres, the front brakes last year and the cam belt that was in with the purchase price.

I could not bring myself to pay £14k for a 100k+ car unless:

a) I done about 2k per year (but then theres absolutely no chance it'd be a diseasel A5)
b) £14k was just a disposable sum to me (but then there's absolutely no chance it'd be a diseasel A5)
c) It was something highly desirable (but then there's absolutely no chance it'd be a diseasel A5)

For 14k there are plenty of other cars that would be on my list before a 105,000 mile diesel A5...

OP, how many miles are you doing a year, and what sort of car are you looking at (except the A5)?

I am no mileage eater, I do around 8-9K a year. I have looked at Focus ST-3 (10 - 11 plates) mainly. But like the look of the A5s

All of my cars have been "boring family cars", ie Ford Escort, Sierras and Mondeos. I am not really set on any car, I just fancied something with a bit more to it than my 1.8LX Mondeo!! :D

Thanks Fox, good points and I was thinking similar myself, but there are a lot of A5s at this price point and mileage, so wondered what others thought about them.

I had a drive in it this afternoon, it felt worn to me. that is the only I can describe it. I will wait and see what else comes along! :)

For that mileage, why do you want a TDI?

I'd much rather throw £14k on a 135i or 335i than a A5 TDI. Or another petrol of similar ilk but more frugal but since you're considering a Focus ST then I assume you're happy with 25mpg.

Why on earth do you want a diesel then?

For 14k, buy something petrol and fun if you want speed/good driving experience. If not, buy something petrol and newer and not a 105k mile diesel A5.

Because if you're not a petrolhead it's money you could spend on important things

At 8-9k miles a year the petrol cost difference is going to be in the low hundreds...If that is a bother for him you have to question why he is spending 14k on a car in the first place.

He's spending £14k on a car, your post makes no sense.

Just because he's spending £14k on a car doesnt mean he wants a 306bhp twin turbo. The fact he's selected 2.0 TDI makes it blatantly obvious that high performance is not something he cares about.

A better suggestion would have been an A4/5 2.0T or a 320i or something - better value, newer, etc etc than the high performance alternative but a better buy than the diesel.

Either that or he knows nothing about cars (in the nicest way), but I concede that perhaps a 320i or similar is better value. Just saying what I'd buy I guess. :)

Thinking about it, if the OP does like the A5, then the 2.0T would be a much better buy I'd imagine.

Because a £14k car could more comfortable, more keeping up with the Jones than a £5k car etc

Add to that the associated costs of something high performance. If youre just not into it, its a waste

You can get an M6 for that money, buy one of those, it's the same with a 'little' more power and 'slightly' higher running costs.

I would have thought you could pick up a 2.0T A5 for the same but with much lower mileage, or less for similar mileage. If he is only doing 8-9k miles a year the petrol cost difference is not going to be much.
