Which engine would you go for:

A 2.0T or a 3.0 V6 TDI?

and why?

Car will be used for just general driving around town and around two 200mile motorway journeys a month. MPG isn't a factor.

Thanks

Seems like a strange choice as there's 5k difference in OTR price

2.0T FSI Sport - 30k
3.0TDI Sport - 36k
3.2 FSI Sport - 36k

Assuming it's a company car so the cost is tax related?

No not a company car. My sister is looking for her next car and that is two she's interested in.

If MPG isnt an issue, I'd go out the way to find a 3.2 then. Although the V6 TDI does look pretty good - if it was between those 2 I definitely wouldnt have the 2.0T

I dont know about the 2.0 but the 3.0 Diesel is fantastic! The whole car is something else. Get the Sline version if possible, that has all the toys!

OP: Are you looking at the used car market or dealer approved?

I thought the 3.0 litre TDI quattro dooes 0-60 in 5.9 which is very respectable if you ask me, correct me if im wrong!

Because its four wheel drive and therefore gets off the line very quickly giving it an artificially low 0-60 time.

It does not have the same overall levels of performance as other cars which acheive 0-60 in 5.something seconds.

I wouldn't say it is 'artificially low' - it gets to 60mph in the time it does, no two ways about it.

It is just a car of different merits to X, Y and Z. The car having 4wd doesn't affect the validity of its 0-60 times.

However, that is not to say that a 0-60 comparison isn't in any way naive...

If you use 0-60 to appraise the general performance you can expect from a car (Which although you shouldnt is usually the only figure you have, so what else are you supposed to use) you might end up a bit dissapointed with a 3.0 TDI A5 because it does 0-60 in 5.9 seconds because it gets off the line like a rat up a drainpipe, not because it offers performance on a par with other cars with a similar 0-60 time.

The 330d, for example, does 0-60 in 6.0 seconds. On paper slower than the A5, in the real world, it is the faster car. The 335d has a 0-60 time exactly the same as an A5 3.0TDI. So, the same performance? Yea right, the 335d is noticeably quicker.

In complete agreement!

The 335D is a far faster car, its got more power and torque plus a vast amount more actually getting to the tarmec, but if you went of 0-60 times you could be led to believe they both offer same levels of performance.

It would be nice to see manufacturers posting more times like 30-70mph, 60-100mph and 0-100mph to get a truer representation of performance.

You have to think to yourself in real-world driving its rare you go from a standstill too full throttle, you far more likely to accelerate hard through the gears from a roll.

Perfect example is A5 3.0TDI Quattro takes 16.6s to hit 100mph from a standstill. Yet the BMW 335D with the same 0-60mph time as the A5 gets upto 100mph a lot quicker in just 13.7s, more or less a whole 3s quicker.

The 335D also remaps too 335BHP and 500lb/ft reducing 0-100mph to sub 12s, for a diesel thats very fast.
