I'm looking at a second hand Audi A6 Black Edition. It's a 14 plate with about 25k miles on the clock. Seems to be in decent condition. However, I'm not familiar with Audis at all so I was wondering if there were any gotchas that I should be aware of.

One thing I was wondering about was the ride quality - this model has 20" alloys with a sports suspension which gives a firm ride. Is there any way to soften it slightly for comfort or would I be stuck with it?

General comments, advice, etc will be welcomed!

What engine? Why this car vs any alternatives? Offerings from Mercedes and bmw tend to be ranked more favourably.

The entertainment system is awful in them compared even to much lesser cars. Given the relative small cost of implementing a decent entertainment system, I find it mind blowing that even things like A8s had the basic MMI in them that most of the range had.

I've had a 2.0 TDI and currently have a 3.0 BiTDI A6 Black Edition.

Need a bit more info tbh, like is it a 2 litre? Is it an automatic? 2014 onwards got the DSG which is a good gearbox. It's a smooth cruiser which looks good and considering the 20s rides pretty well.

Does it have any options? Tech pack (larger screen, touchpad, colour DIS) makes a big difference to the interior. Infotainment system is showing its age but still perfectly usable IMO. No issues at all playing music from HDD, SD card or from phone via bluetooth. The Bose sound system in the Black Edition is very good.

ETA: Full service history with Audi is also very important.

2 litre TDI, manual. No upgrades beyond the basic setup that I'm aware of.

As to why I'm looking at the Audi as opposed to BMW/ Mercedes equivalents - I don't like the look of the equivalents!

I like that age of A6. Black edition should have decent speakers IIRC, my A4 one did anyway. But you really want to hold out for the tech pack if you can.

I've never, I will repeat, never, had a modern Audi 2.0 TDI that was decent with fuel economy though. And I have owned at least 3. Wouldn't have another personally, but do know of people who have had decent ones. So I would also try for the 3.0. And the auto preferably. A car this size you really want an auto with a decent engine.

Of course, budget dictates.

My 2016 A6 Ultra (2.0 Auto) was getting up to 55mpg on any sort of decent run which I thought was great. Quite a bit lower on the 14 mile commute in winter but that's to be expected. My 3.0 BiTDI with 500 miles on the clock is doing 42 on similar runs which I think is good too.

I think fuel economy on a well run in A6 would be pretty good, but definitely agree that a manual won't suit that car. The auto in 2014 cars onwards is really good and I'd recommend holding out for that.

Thanks for the help and comments. I've looked into what the tech pack is and it appears to just be a larger touch/ satnav screen. I understand the standard screen size is about 5.5" while this car has a 6.5" screen so it may well have the tech pack...

Re auto gearbox. While I would happily consider one, the wife wouldn't. End of discussion, move along please. Nothing to see here!

I have come across a real killer though. Apparently there are no heated seats! This can't be right surely? You can't have leather seats with no heater function! Can anyone confirm that this isn't standard equipment?

It should be immediately obvious if a car has tech pack or not. Tech pack will have colour DIS between the rev and speedo dials, non tech pack cars have a low resolution black and white display.

Interesting my parent own or have owned a number of VWs which I think use the same engine and always got good economy though I think the engine is embroiled in a number of performance and emission scandals currently.

It's debatable whether a 2014 E Class is better than a 2014 A6.

I'd say in terms of looks it is. Although obviously subjective.
The ride in the Audi is renowned for being utter crap and whilst the Merc isn't fantastic it's still rated higher. Also I'm pretty sure it has a bigger boot which is always useful in a saloon!

To be fair, it's no worse than "lol bezels" on non Pro Nav on most current BMWs!

Well it is, the crap screen in a 5 series sounds like it's the same size as the 'tech pack' screen in the A6. It's 6.5". All 5 Series have had a full colour display in the instrument panel since launch in 2010.

Audi damping is terrible. I don't know why they think luxury barges should have such a hard ride.

It's not the size of the screen that I'm referring to, more that if you don't get Pro Nav in the BMW, you get a nice 3" bezel instead, lovely.
