Audi Red I

Assuming you mean the 'i' on TDi then the red indicates a 130bhp engine and the standard 100bhp afaik.

You will now get 5 different answers all saying it means 5 different things. The VW community has for years tried to work out what the red I means. The only thing you can be certain of is that the car is fitted with a mundane, rattly, slow diesel engine.

In reality it's likely that the colour of the I is meaningless.

For the first TDIs it differentiated between 90/110hp versions, but as Fox says it then got very complicated.

it still applies to some more recent models (not that recent), for example the B6 A4 still had a red i in the TDi to differenciate between the 105 and 130, but then there will be models around that era with a red i that indicates nothing. Generally it should just be ignored, the only sure fire way of knowing the cars power being the engine code

I thought it was;

No red I's 90bhp
1 red I 115bhp
2 red I's 130bhp
3 red I's 150bhp

No?

What I really meant was;

No red letters 90bhp TDI
1 red I 115bhp TDI
2 red letters 130bhp TDI
3 red letters 150bhp TDI

;)

You should post that on one of those forums children with cars frequent, we'll see a host of cars with a half dozen red I's streaming across the back end.

What so a 150bhp A4 says 'TDIII' on the back? :p

Only if you upgrade it. The more red 'i's you add the faster the car goes. It's the maxpower sticker for the diesel generation. If you add green 'i's you get better fuel economy.

that's the case with VW's but audi's are a bit weird since they have so many different types of TDI engines. It does apply to some models of audi though

VW did at one time have a system for the colouring of the letters on the TDI's, but basically gave up as so many dealers started rebadging cars to look better than they were.

Seen so many variations but the best has to be a boggo basic mk4 golf sdi (no turbo) with GT TDI on the back, looked really silly mixed in with the 15" wheeltrims, black trims and basic interior.....
