Audi S4 & BMW e46 M3's

And massively increase the budget...
Maybe not massively. Main dealer M3 coupe, around 50k miles (2003-2005), £16k-18. Buy in Jan/Feb and you will hopefully be in a good position to get that down.

If he can "comfortably" (to quote) afford £13-15,000, then I am sure he can stretch that little bit more for piece of mind.

It strips off virtually every car on the market. There are only three main dealer located E39 M5's in the entire country. All are at Hexagon, who are known for joke pricing - here is the cheapest:
I was talking about M3s - I know that good M5s from main dealers are gold dust.

I probably could stretch but I have to draw the line somewhere I'm in no rush to purchase so I'll sit and wait till I find an great example, unless Fox beats me to it. :p

This one caught my eye. Seems loved and well looked after.

Yea, I saw that as well. It's probably in good condition - but you are paying for that with the price. Despite its price its still had a pikeycheap wheel refurb. Most people dont bother to refurb the wheels properly so you lose the shadow chrome effect and get plain silver. It's also a pretty low spec example - you really want one with the Comms pack with Nav/TV etc.

The interior is also a bit weird - blue was only available on certain colours and I am 99% Carbon Black was not one of them and it doesn't appear to be an Individual...

Does look like your best shot otherwise! But it's X reg... it's almost 10 years old. See my point? It's whats making me so nervous about it.

I know 'looks' are not everything but you are buying a car that looks very similar to the tatty 150k mile shed next door might next week pick up from the acuction for 2.5k wearing a 520i badge..

I cant give you a definitive answer as I've not yet found it myself :D

I dont really understand why you'd look at M3's *and* M5's. They are both very different - one is a hard edged Coupe/Cabrio the other is a rapid continent crossing supersaloon.

I mean surely you decide what type of car you want and then that lends yourself to either the M3 or the M5 by... default?

See this is the problem I'm having at the moment, I don't really have any criteria for a new car bar it preferably being quicker than what I have.

2/3/4/5 door, big, small etc all don't really matter so it's making it a pig of a job narrowing options down!

Well it seems that my budget is going to get me an M5 thats around 2000-2001 or an M3 thats around 2003-2005 depending on spec and mileage. Something to really think about.

Dont discount an S4 though, its still a good car whatever some may say, has a great engine (not the same as RS4 I know) four wheel drive, a nice interior and can be picked up a lot cheaper than a M3.
Probably as fast point to point as a M3, both great cars, maybe you should test drive one to make up your own mind.
Now getting ready to duck for fox's broadside attack.

Rather than the S4 have you thought of maybe a 2003 RS6 saloon with the 4.2 V8 biturbo with 450bhp.

There's one on pistonheads thats had a lot of upgrades done thats at the top end of your budget:

looks like a drug dealers car if you ask me, look at the houses in the background certainly not an RS6 neighbourhood. Would never touch an RS6 that was not stock, been thrashed for sure
