Audi S4 Quattro...

Get an B5 S4 you know you want to...

265bhp/295lbft, easliy remapped to 310bhp/370lbft.

With gutted pre-cats,RS4 intercoolers and exhaust, you're looking at 330+bhp/400lbft.

If the turbos go, bung some K04's on, with RS4 fueling and the above mods you're looking at 420bhp/440lbft :D

Handling can be sorted with some nice H&R coilovers and maybe some uprated arb's.

As for brakes, bung some RS6 calipers and B7 rs4 disks on ;)

The S4 looks different to the run of the mill A4, much in the same as a 97 e39 520 does to a 03 e39 M5..

I'd have a S4 over a M3, but M5 over a RS6. :)

The problem with the RS2 is its an old car now. I looked at getting one myself a couple of years ago as I love Porsche, and really liked the idea of a rare, practical, 4wd estate with the fantastic Audi 5-pot engine which had been breathed on by Porsche. But at around 12 years old now, they are going to be reaching the age where the engines will be in the 100,000+ range which is a lot for a highly stressed blown lump.

As a project car/sunday track day racer of course they start to make a whole lot more sense. But then there are so many alternatives, a Dahlback style URQuattro, or one of those Dialynx shortened quattro conversions which look awesome!

Cheers for the posts lads some top info, I will post further about it during lunch :)

I think whatever i get it has to be 4WD, never owned one before but due to the weather i think it will be ideal, don't really want a second RWD car and i don't do powerfull FWD motors.

I was thinking about the Audi Quattro since they look stunning however i don't know if i want an 80's tastic motor (No matter how good) as my main car, thats why something around the 98 - 00 area takes my fancy.

I love jap motors, its honest get in turn the key and drive off motoring and they make some stunning cars, but for this one i'm being pulled into the land of the germans for some reason, i think its the 'never owned one before' factor.

Not that bothered about an M3, nice cars i just can't see myself driving one, love the 540i but that could be a bigger money pit than the S4.

I agree that the RS2 is an icon and the S4 almost looks like a normal A4, but i love that understated look that makes the chavs think its nothing that special and people who know about cars respect it for what it is.

Andy if i got one you can bet your bottom dollar it won't stay stock for too long :)

Impreza Sti Wagon.

Import so Jap spec goodies from the factory, quick, capable, fun, lots of space, AWD and your budget gets an well loved un-abused example.

Good taste Firestar. That Black S4 looks awesome. I may end up with one of those as like earlier post mentions the tuning potential is awesome. Go for it.

The RS2 Looks ugly and dated. If you were brave enough to go for something older the U R quattro is the king.

Ka-ching!

Late classic STI Wagons are rare as you like and therefore most appear to have been well looked after.

And after reading those repair bills for the S4, I'd steer well clear. You could get the STI engine replaced for £2K not just taken out :)

The Audi RS2 in all its glory:
2.2 litre 5 cylinder turbo-charged engine producing 315PS@6500rpm,
which gives:
0-100km/h = 4.8s
top speed = 163mph
