With possible redundancies on the cards and the ever increasing price of fuel my RX8 is starting to seem like a very expensive way of getting around. I was fine with the 16-18MPG until the novelty wore off but now I just want something a bit better. Unfortunately no room for a second car so a change it is!

Have been looking at the Audi TT Quattro in 225BHP guise and they look pretty good with the right alloys but I have not test driven one yet. looking at 2002 onwards for the facelift versions, they can be picked up from £4000 (ropey!?) upwards. What are peoples opinions and experiences of these?

Any alternatives I could consider?
Requirements:

Budget is £6000
coupés ideally, am unlikely to out the roof down much on a convertible.
Would prefer RWD/4WD but can't be too fussy.
Maximum 10 years old

my missus has one and tbh I really like it, handling is a bit soggy but other than that it's fun, the interiors tend to handle the miles well too

fuel consumption not great, hers is all town driving but she only get 24mpg

Not really sure how 'My RX8 is expensive to run, I think I will buy a 10 year old Audi' fits together really, cant see it saving you anything? The minor fuel savings will be eaten up by fixing stuff?

Exactly - the TT's that are around 6k will me of the age where things are liable to break simply due to wear and tear. So the cost of these fixes will more than eat up any savings in fuel.

I just ditched mine for this reason - would have needed about £1k's worth of bits and peices to get it through the next MOT. PX'd it and ran away!

Agree'd.

High mileage Quattro's are known for Haldex issues.

On the flipside of that though, a family member has the said car which i have driven extensively. Long and short of it, "out of the box" they have soggy handling. They do have good build quality though and have massive tuning potential.

I personally wouldn't want to get rid of an RX-8 for a 4k Mk1 TT but you will save on fuel (family member gets 28mpg and has 270bhp).

Sadly I have to agree on the TT front. The shame about Audis at this age is that it's all the little things that break. Problem is, all the little bits can be big bills.

I would have suggested something like a 350Z maybe, but I've found that 6k is very much scraping the barrel so I'd ignore them. The 330 would probably get my vote but I can't see that the fuel savings are going to be that noticeable? Is it worth playing the second hand car game for £30 a month saving?

I know you are probably right with this, I am just struggling to think of anything worth having in this budget. It's not that the RX8 is expensive to run in general, more that I am fed up with spending £70 a week on fuel to do 170-200 miles.. and the constant worry that the engine WILL need a rebuild at some point. As has been said by plenty of people, if it had a normal engine it would be great (ignoring any weight/handling changes etc).

Edit - just worked out that my last tank of fuel equated to 15.2MPG, even at 24MPG I would be saving over £100 a month doing 10,000 miles a year!

Edit again - Sanity check - Actually thinking about this and it's a pretty silly idea! By the time I trade my car in and spend the £3000 I have here on a new car I will have to save £100 in fuel for just over 2 years to actually make back the £3000 I have spent. This may have been worth the risk if it was a straight swap but it won't be so am just going to forget about it all! If Redundancy does come up then I'll sell up and get something cheap and boring until I can afford to run a sports car again.
