nope, don't need to spend money on fancy gimiky sound processors and EQ varying programs.... My modded emu-0404 outputs my music and game sounds in gorgeous sounding 2-channel audio to either my arcam amp + speakers, or my tube headphone amp + grado's
I use an X-Fi Platinum through Linn Amps on Celestion SL6s speakers and it sounds very impressive. Also have a Pure Evoke-3 DAB connected via Toshlink and a high end Rotel CD Player on SPDIF.
These components are bit of an overkill for a PC setup but they are remnants from my previous 2.1 system rather then sell them off cheap I thought Id make use of them.
I moved from an Audigy 4 to an X-fi elite on release day, i noticed a huge difference, the onboard memory is being used by many titles too.
Well worth the move imho!
the x-fi does sound better than most sound cards, but creatives software is horrible dont install it, just use the drivers and audio console for chaning modes.
it wouldnt be so much noticeable on just random speakers unless there good quality speakers then a good quality card to go with it will have a better impact.
but if you have 5.1 or surround/3d headsets then a X-fi would impress you a lot
i went from 5.1 HD onboard audio on my asus p5w dh-deluxe which was AMAZING sound quality to a x-fi fatality FPS edition card.
i thaught well how better could it get than 5.1 HD onboard audio....
and the result was about 5 times better
as for the software... well if you like messing around with things like recording and MIDI making ETC, then its 100% usefull i found it verry verry handy for recordings etc for video projects etc...
but if your just a hardcore gamer who wants the little possible things, just install the drivers to run it and the audio console that comes with it anyway
